I'm using Necromancer Games' dire template on p12 : http://www.necromancergames.com/pdf/ToHDire.pdf

That said, what should the level adjustment be? Base HD +1? I allow for dire spellcasters -- manual dexterity needed to cast spells my arse -- and currently have a mid-level dire wolf fighter who thinks the party are a bunch of despoilers who need to be exterminated.

You having a PC with those? If not, do not bother, at least not for now, if you want some guideline, I would give them +1ECL mainly because they can cast spell without somatic components, either that or you just do not require finger motions, which works fine anyway.

i think the little information you gave us is misleading and insuficient. Wink

Dire animals will figure prominantly in a campaign set in the Veradeen. I want to be able to properly put CR and ECL on dire animals so that I can account for the effects they will have on a fight. Yes, one of the wolves is a spellcaster but I'm going to calculate her just as I would any other channeler.

The PDF is for making dire creatures that are not otherwise present in d20.

Well, Midnight dire animals are, in fact, awakened dire animals (as per the spell Awaken). Determining their CR is easy enough, they should get about 1 or 2 for their awakening, it boosts their saves and makes them much more capable on fights, casting spells could be taken into their CR if you haev them learn it through feats, or by character class.

If you want to advance them you can also do that by character class, which is a much better option, imo. As to their ECL, that is a tricky thing, very tricky, Savage Species has a wealth of ideas on how to determine that, I can't say i have any idea on abstract, each dire animal will ahve a different ECL, for dire wolves i would say they are somewhere between 3 and 5 ECL, meaning they equal a PC of that level when in the party, my advice to you is, take one alognside a party for sometime and see how he fares in comparison to them, high bonuses and hps will often result in a larger impact in combat, meaning it is outshining the PCs, so up its ECL.

Note that it's not specifically the awaken spell. It's an effect similar to it, but it's not the spell verbatim.

I know, but it is the closest one can get of describing them in few words. Wink

And remember,

Winter Wolves are not evil in Midnight, they are friends of the Erunsil and are in fact good.

And in my campaign, they're considered holy by the dire wolves of the Veradeen. Smiley
