Am I the only DM with players opting for a more active approach with the golem?

They drew the walking statue to the bridge, causing a bridge collapse (the bridge could only support 500 pounds, and the players used Stonecunning to asses the possibility of a collapse under a heavier load).

The golem is still scraping its way out: it fell at the bottom of the Carina, has no purchase to draw itself out (deep trough and the riverbanks are bedrock).

As it follows its last issued command, it should be there for some time to come

Normally, my campaigns see Spontaneous Halfling Combustion as a standard. I make an exception for Midnight, but no one dares...

I can't remember exactly, but isn't this more or less exactly like it's done in Crown?

Long time since I played that encounter now...

Well in fact, you're supposed to have the PCs slay goblins while elves attempt to tackle the golem and mostly create a diversion before the group flees the premises, allowing for the goblins to rise as Fell by the time they come back this way...

The golem is supposed to get back out of the water in a matter of d4+4 rounds. Problem: golem Int = 0, and I can't imagine it suddenly taking all kinds of initiatives. The text specifically states the Falls' "water flows most of the year", which also means it occasionally stops. Thus, there is no soil in that river at this point, and the depth would not allow a golem to readily pull out when surrounded by steep walls and standing on a narrow floor. Now, if instead of a river, we make this a stream or brook, that would change.

The "boys in the band" set the golem up, slew the gobs and hacked off their heads, so there won't be much of a Fell situation...

I find CoS to be good, but there are a few aspects that become reminiscent of the Dragonlance campaign (a little railroading, shall we say?)

Many loose ends, many pre-ordained events or resolution of events.

Still fun though...

I think the aim of the encounter is to have the Golem stuck in the river of ronly a few rounds, which means the characters should have time to finish the goblins and then run, since they don't really have any ways to hurt the golem.

The whole elves dealing with golems thing is at a later encounter, outside of Durgis Rock, I think.

The beheaded goblins won't make a fell encounter there impossible, you'll just have to get a little creative. Say the fresh goblin corpses attracted fell from somewhere else, there's supposed to have been quite a lot of fighting in the area. They could even happen upon dwarven fell. Think of the horror they'll face when they come back and find that somethings been feasting on the dead goblins.

I don't see a problem, the fell encounter also states that it happens because they weren't beheaded, you can always have the golem kill some other vagrants around the area before they come, you might even have it innactive when they pass there again, with blood on its fists and no corpses showing.

The adventure kind of requires certain things to happen for future events, true, but the truly important ones are not that hard to trigger and every other thing can be saved for future use. You also seem to have the directly opposite issue of the making characters act like heroes thread... Wink

Edit: And because your avatar tricked me before, welcome to the boards, Xo. Wink

Previous "quote" was a failed attempt at an edit...

To add to the golem in the river bit, given that a few days later, in Durgis Rock, the same elves take out THREE golems, it is difficult to comprehend why Rhiann would be put off or non-plussed by a lone golem.

Plunging it in the Carina and leaving it to churn thus turns out to be 1) better, and 2) more believable in the long run

I have deleted the quote post then, if you need any help on how to use the fucntions and codes, feel free to ask about them in meta, which is there for that kind of thing as well. Wink

As I said on the Reloaded Chapter 1 thread, I amde Rhiann exhitant to use spells because that could give away their position, they still ahevn't learned of the attack on Durgis Rock and she wanted to keep a low profile, as much as she could. I never take the I can kill I will approach with my NPCs, sometimes the risk is not worthy it, and that is what i used on this scene, on the river  do not make it a lot hard to get out of and the speed of the water would not be able to take a golem away, I did not make it swim, but he could walk out of the water's levl until he got close to the margin and then pull himself out.

I did make the throwing it inside the water part what allowd them to escape, the PCs get bold while the elves are around too, as they see those leaving and becuase they have no idea of their power they get more cautious when they see that none of them has cast a spell and are all trying to leave instead of facing the golem (I even palced an elf using total defense against the golem, to avoid being hit while calling its attention).

You can easily haev the scene end as you suggest though, i do not think that would be a problem, sincee they do not afce the goblins fell thing and have taken down the golem, award them the Xp that should be given from the fell encounter, that should fix any issue with Xp progression that you might have (though I did not bother with that myself).
