At the request of Nif, I am reposting this short piece that made the cutting room floor from Fury of Shadow. Apparently it was too long.

The heavy fog clung to the stifling hot air as blood from the battle stained the living foliage of the dark forest a deep crimson red. The stench of bloated corpses attracted a horde of sickening vermin, writing together in an orgy of feasting delight. The bodies that lay still upon the ground were the fortunate ones; an entire division of the Risen stood motionless facing their great leader awaiting his next order. With narrowed eyes, the commander surveyed the carnage for weak spirits that could not choose this world or the next; those that clung desperately to life and feared death would take them.

Like a wraith borne of flesh, his swirling white eyes pierced the barrier that separated the worlds. This time, it seemed, the ones that were slain were prepared to die long before the battle was joined. Their spirits were free the moment their last breath exited their lungs. The commander strode forward with an obsidian stone staff in hand, regarding his small army with repulsed aversion as the forest insects fed upon their dead flesh. He could smell, above the mephitis odour, the promise of a fresh soul nearby; it was a scent like rain upon scorched earth, so powerful that it was a mystery to him why no other was able to perceive it.

As the mindless undead parted before their commander, his spirit-world vision beheld the wavering form of an elf child staring wide eyed at his own broken body. The spirit child drifted from his figure to the one that lay next to it, connected by frail hands held tightly together. The boy touched his gossamer hand to the females’ silken hair and wept quietly next to her. The commander watched with numb candour as he approached the whimpering child. For a moment, the commander felt a throe of envy as he held his midnight staff atop the grieving boy; soon, the suffering would all be over for the child, yet his own torment, imprisoned between life and death, would continue on for generations.

The boy smiled; his face was radiant as he marvelled at the commander before him. He spoke in a whispered voice, and his last words echoed in the commanders’ ears as the transparent form of the child was devoured by the powerful staff.

‘You are an elf like me.’

Thanks for posting it Kurtis, I really wanted to have this and now I will not loose it again (prints the thread). Wink

A nice one, as has been stated before. I think you use the word "commander" little too often, but aside from that, it's a very nice description of Jaran the Reaver.
