I saw a neat thread on RPGnet that made me think -  "gee, I wish I had a similar bunch of ideas for Midnight..."
So I wanted to see what you all thought...

Check out the thread for  Unknown Armies plot-in-a-line thread at
http://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?t=120418
And now lets do the SAME for the Midnight setting....  Wink

Here's the basic idea...

These are the little rumors, the scarey bedtime tales, the things people say that keep others in line.  They're also the things that may or may not be true about the Enemy,  the legates,  the orcs,  the Uruks,  it's the  "What you hear"  for Midnight.

Each one should be basically, a plot seed in about 2-3 lines.  Scary/Crazy enough to be interesting, compelling enough to believe.  Make them specific with your own NPC names/places  or general enough to be used by all...

So, let's come up with some. I'll go first:   (borrowed from ideas on AtS)

Quote

"The Enemy in the North does not seek the annilation of humanity.  our oppression is a regrettable inconvenience from the Shadow's fight against the Fey.  The men and women that endure in the Shadow's embrace will sit at the hand of the Dark Father when he makes his return to the Heavens.  Embrace shadow and you will be rewarded..."

Next.  Wink

The Riders in the sky aren't just rumours, they're here, on Aryth.  That isn't mythology, it's prophecy!  Look at Jahzir!  Why do you think the Southlands haven't suffered as much as the North?  We are the scions of the coming god, the ones lucky enough to see all of our myths become real!  The supposed Shadow in the North is simply the head of the Shorshef, testing our loyalty. We must help by rooting out all dissention and destroying the fey in order to secure our place.

another alternative could be RESISTANCE Rumors of hope  or  false hope!

Quote
"The key to resistance victory is to use the traitor princes and Night Kings as they used our forefathers when the Shadow fell.  When they turned against us we lost,  now we must find the ways to turn them against one another so that we may rise.  If we step back from our miserable lives we can see...  Ask yourself, why is it the Priest of Shadow re-arms the Sword of Shadow?  It's obvious to me...  If only Jahzir knew..."

specific to my campaigns but possibly useful to others...

Quote
"When the last man, orc and elf fell at the 'Battle of Ice Blood Tundra', not 5 miles from Nalford this past dead of winter, they did not lie long!  Hundreds rose to the horror of those still alive and wounded.  Rumor has it a master of the undead, an insidious demon called 'LICH' is what made it happen.  But how, where and why - the Shadow only knows.  Gods help the resistance if this be a new weapon in the enemy's plan,  gods help us all if the undead's rising time is evolving!"

Regarding the Dwarven Caern Shadowhold - why would a Dwarven Clan name their caern after the Enemy in the North?? Good question... The name resulted from the local corruption of an older name of a dwarven warcry - "Shadow, Halt!", over time this would become "Shadowhalt" which translated to "Shadowhold".  It's told that place is none but a tomb now, lying on the ashes of the great Dwarven kingdom of millenia ago,  the last of the men of stone making Shadowhold home were lost in the latest push for victories in the Orc General's bid for command at Jahzir's side.  But all of eastern Eredane heard the HAMMER-HORN sound - do the Dwarves have allies left?  Should we answer the call?

"It's true I tell you,  my sister's husband's uncle saw the caravan that went into the jungles at the beginning of Hisha,  when it was seen again just recently only a thrid of the Legate's troop returned!  And he said the Legate was so pleased with his efforts, only a small tithe was taken,  the Legate even allowed him to look in last of the caravan box wagons -  boasting his genius at how he created a new race with the demon elixars found within the Aruun...  Though it was a pack of aweful beasts the only description given of what he spied was that of immense bear-beasts with the winged talons of a hunting bird of prey!  I heard the Legate told him it was made from 'dires'  -  my sister's husband's uncle called them bears-birds.  But I remember my grampa's tales of bears with the features of owls - Owlbears he called them.

One hundred years has it been since the Mithral Gates of Emerund were closed against the encroaching shadow of Gor Grafang.

One hundred years have we huddled in the dark and waited below Aryth's surface, ignoring the tortured moans of Dogorin and the distant pleas of our kin. We have husbanded our iron and wood and fodder and coal and passed the time reciting old legends and growing old and long-bearded in isolation. Almost have we forgotten what it means to be dwarven: to fight.

One hundred years have we, the dwarves of Emerund, named ourselves cowards.

One hundred years is long enough.

Let our Mithral Gates be cast open, because we are ready to reclaim our pride and our mountains.

Yesterday, the killed a man in the middle of the street - at least they tried to.  The orcs cut him down and they tied him up, but he didn't die from the blows.  They say when they tied him to the stake, he was still alive.  They lit the pyre and let him burn.  My brother said he screamed until the fire died down, a good couple of hours, I left after the first twenty minutes.   I've even heard he was still screaming - hoarsely, of course = when the buried him.  Supposedly, he was executed for some magic something or other.  If that what magic does, I don't want it.  What, you do?  Well.. just go out where the ground screams.

Drigibile, I think it was Dorogin. Wink  have an erenlander thing akin to Sebastianism in Portugal, they waited for the king to come back after 300 years had passed, in erenland:

Quote
We suffer since we lost the war, they say, but in truth they do not know what we live for, the king, he is alive, and will come back one day, with weapon in hand and crown high above, he is gathering time and faithful followers, and if you prove yourself enough, you might join him, in this ride for freedom

I've seen it spelled at least three different ways, and I got the spelling I used straight out of the glossary in Hammer. If FFG can't be arsed to coordinate the spelling, I don't see why I should Smiley

The next time you wonder why we suffer so, blame the fey.

It’s said that the Dark Lord used to favor the fey as they were His first creation.  He gave the world to the elves and dwarves and all He asked in return was that they give him the proper respect.  When they refused to worship Him the Dark Lord grew angry, cursing this world and all who walk on it. It’s their fault we must burn our dead, their fault the orcs (the only fey who repented) savage us, their fault we live without hope.

It’s also said that when the last elf falls and the last dwarf is broken the Dark Lord will forgive the world… and whoever slays them will have His favor forever more.

There's so few kids around anymore.  Milly's child was stillborn after only six months.  I've even heard horror stories about some kids being born dead.  Not all of the kids are dyijng, though; some of them just vanish.  They say that there is one child, a boy-child with a flute.  They say he seems older than he is.  He shows up in real bad places and starts piping on that thing.  All the kids just.. they just follow him.  The adults just let 'em go, even the Orcs, like they was standing asleep.  I don't know what those kids are doing or who that other one is, but no one ever sees them agian.

I heard the rumor from one of the other Legates. One of the 'Lich' Legates is trying to push it through. What does he care right? He's beyond all that. I'm not, I don't care what they say. They'll start with rebels, as punishment. Then they'll spread it to ousiders in positions of power. Eventually they'll make it a prerequisite of gaining rank in the Order. It'll be civil war in the Black Tower first.

No one is gelding me.
