Oh, the humanity!

« on: September 25, 2006, 03:45:33 PM »

|

Let dwarves recite the names of the ancestors that wielded their axes in reverence, and elves marvel over the craft and elegance of their blades. The Deathwielder understands what a weapon is and always is: a tool for bringing fear and pain to those that oppose the Shadow. And to this end, no weapon is superior to the vardatch.

Deathwielders are soldier legates, frequently those that are charged with leading orcish regiments, who have forsaken most of their dark sorcery to pursue a thoroughly martial path. Looked down upon by other legates for their choice of weapon who in their right mind would choose a crude iron hacker over the sacred elegance of a black longsword or barbed mace? - Deathwielders often find themselves better able to relate to their Odrendor troops than other legates. Those assigned to follow orcish warchiefs tend to end up being even more trusted as advisers than other soldier legates, and it is not unheard of for Deathwielders to be made honorary tribe members after particularly savage and triumphant campaigns.

Deathwielders are incredibly brutal warriors, hewing limbs and butchering foes left and right as they charge across the battlefield at the head of a yowling gang of orcs. They are not without guile and skill, however, as they are the closest to being weapon-masters of the vardatch as any are likely to be.

Hit Die: d10.

Prerequsites
Rank of Dark Knight in the soldier legates.
Skills: Intimidate 8 ranks.
Feats: Skill Focus (Intimidate), Weapon Focus and Specialisation (any kind of vardatch).

Skill Points per Level: 4 + Int mod.

LevelBAB  Fort  Ref  Will  Casting  Special
1+1+2+0+0-Brutal cleaver
2+2+3+0+0-Wielded death
3+3+3+1+1-Respect of the blade +1
4+4+4+1+1-Wielded death
5+5+4+1+1-Ultimate warrior training
6+6+5+2+2-Wielded death, respect of the blade +2
7+7+5+2+2--
8+8+6+2+2-Wielded death
9+9+6+3+3-Respect of the blade +3
10+10+7+3+3-Ultimate warrior training, wielded death

Special Abilities
Brutal Cleaver (Ex): At 1st level, the Deathwielder gains Improved Critical (Vardatch) as a bonus feat, regardless of prerequisites.

Wielded Death (Ex): The Deathwielder's greatest skill is to use her vardatch to maim, cripple, mutilate and destroy in a way that would but a Sister of Tender Mercy's most subtle torture-scalpels to shame. Each time she acquires this class ability, the Deathwielder may choose one of the following abilities.
  • Aggressive Parry: For every successful attack she makes, the Deathwielder gains a +1 dodge bonus to AC for one round.
  • Blood Fountain: On a successful confirmed critical hit, the Deathwielder may forgo the extra damage in order to leave her victim with a bleeding wound. This deals continuing damage equal to her Wisdom modifier for a number of rounds equal to the damage inflicted, and may be staunched by a heal check or any healing magic.
  • Crippling Strike: (prerequisite: any two other Wielded Death abilities) On a successful confirmed critical hit, the Deathwielder may forgo the extra damage in order to deal Strength of Dexterity damage equal to her critical multiplier plus her Wisdom modifier. For example, a Deathwielder with Wis 16 (+3 bonus) using her crafted vardatch's heavy blow mode (x3 multiplier) would deal 6 points of Str or Dex damage. The same character using the sweeping blow mode of her weapon (x2 critical multiplier) would deal 5 points of ability damage. Victims are entitled to a Fort save (DC 10 + Strength modifier) to halve the ability damage.
  • Dreadful Strike: On a successful confirmed critical hit, the Deathwielder may forgo the extra damage in order to force all enemies within 30ft with line of sight to the victim to make a Will save vs fear (DC 10 + Deathwielder's class level + Cha bonus) or be shaken for a number of rounds equal to her Wisdom modifier plus the critical multiplier of her weapon.
  • Focused Strike: When she makes a full attack, the Deathwielder may give up any number of extra attacks in order to deal more damage with one particular strike. For every attack given up, she deals an extra d4 + Str mod damage on her first attack that round.
  • Mighty Blow: On a successful confirmed critical hit, the Deathwielder may forgo the extra damage in order to deal a blow that leaves her victim reeling. The target is left staggered for 1d3 rounds, or is knocked prone at the Deathwielder's discretion.
  • Routing Strike: On a successful confirmed critical hit, the Deathwielder may forgo the extra damage in order to deal a blow that can turn the tide of battle. All of the Deathwielder's allies within 30ft with line of sight to the victim gain a +2 morale bonus to attacks and damage, while all enemies suffer a -2 morale penalty to attacks and saving throws. These bonus and penalties last for one round.
  • Victorious Execution: When she makes a coup de grace against an enemy, the Deathwielder gains the bonuses similar to the death knell spell: she heals 1d8 hp and gains a +2 bonus to Strength and a +1 bonus to caster level for 10 rounds per HD of the victim.
Respect of the Blade (Ex): Odrendor give grudging respect to those that prove themselves to be such dedicated masters of the vardatch. The Deathwielder gains the listed bonus to all Charisma-based skill checks with orcs and oruks. In addition, she gains the listed bonus as a morale bonus to saves against mind-affecting effects and fear, as her sense of self is so keenly and proudly focused on her skill.

Ultimate Warrior Training (Ex): The Deathwielder's earlier theological training often leaves her a little impaired in pure combat skills compared to a professional man-at-arms. To compensate for this, she may increases her BAB by 1 at levels 5 and 10. Her BAB may never be increased to higher than her level (ie, as if she had only taken levels in classes that offered full BAB progression) by this means.

Awesome work, man. Have an Evil Cookie (tm).

Blood Fountain and Crippling Strike seem a little powerful, but aside from that, I love this. Oh, and to pick nits: Why does she have Ride as a class skill? I figure she'll be going in on foot along with the orcs.

You raise a good point. I might give Crippling strike a Fort save for half / to negate, as it has the potential to deal a LOT of ability damage. And I might tone down the duration of Blood Fountain.

Possible fixes:

Blood Fountain: Forget it, it's good.

Crippling strike: Ability damage equal to critical multiplier. Ability damage is considered pretty damned serious. This might make it a little weak though.

Another solid PRC Dir, I like the "Ultimate warrior training" ability, though i find the name so so.

Crippling strike is quite powerfull compared to the other "on a crit" abilites the deathwieldel can choose, i suggest lowering the crippling strike to wisdom or crit modifer.

Blood fountain is actaully not that powerfull, unless the deathwielder has a very high wisdom bonus, a DW with wis 14 fighting with the x3 crafted vardatch is actually better of without using the abillity. With wis 18 and the 19-20 crafted vardtch on the other hand, it's a killer.

What's wrong with the name?

Try this. I've given Crippling Strike a low-DC save for half; does that ameliorate it a bit?

Laugh I love the pic. That's exactly how I pictured a Deathwielder. You should replace the one over the PrC with it.

And yes, low-DC for half sounds good, IMHO.
