Midnight is coming back in 5E !

This was their reasoning:

"We thought it was more meaningful if the Night Kings were each a manifestation of a different culture in the setting that stood against Izrador and was corrupted. We already had a Sarcosan Night King, so Jahzir, with his focus on martial prowess, was already a perfect example of Dorn warrior culture twisted and made evil. We just needed to change some small elements of his backstory."

So they intended to make Othaeron a Dorn rather than a Sarcosan to spread the Evil around culture wise. Not that it matters a whole lot, but they actually made him an Erenlander from the descriptions and emphasis they used.

Cheers for sharing the explanation, LB. I don't have a strong opinion one way or the other, especially since none of my PCs ever came close to encountering the Sword of Shadow or learning about his origin. Not sure what version I'll use in the future... I'll cross that bridge if/when it actually becomes relevant for my game.

I suppose I have a lot more of an attachment to Jahzir because in my last Midnight campaign we were actually interfering with Jahzir's forces and at the end of our 2nd year playing it, he actually showed up and wrecked several members of our party in a single surprise Great Cleave attack. He would have actually killed our Ironborn Barbarian with a critical hit if he hadn't been the Midnight variant with the 1/2 damage ability. But yeah that's just a me.

I finished a full read-through today (well ... I skipped over most of the stat blocks), and the more complete reading has tended to confirm my earlier impressions.

I'd say that Edge did a good job of adapting the setting to 5E. The content of the book is overwhelmingly flavor text--a quick count indicates around 85%--rather than rules. That suggests to me that it's targeted to those who already like playing using 5E rules and might be attracted to the tone of Midnight, rather than to those who were already sold on Midnight and might like to bring the rules they play under up to date. A lot of the iconic mechanics from MN2E--channeling, separate advancement for heroic paths, halfbreeds, charms--didn't make it into the new edition. The end result seems simpler and probably easier to run, but also less colorful. Were I to DM a group using the new rules, I'd probably add a number of house rules to restore some of the features from MN2E that I'd miss.

It contains a GM's screen and a familiar adventure, the Source of the Revolt (wich was in the MN2E book). I'm guessing that eventually we will have most of the cut content from the book in one form or another. After the GM Screen they will publish The Crown of Shadow.
