Hiding from Shadow

The Black Blade

One year ago, a band of brigands managed to defeat a caravan carrying goods from Bastion to Zorgetch. The legate leading the convoy was killed by the bandits’ leader. Soon afterwards, the gang earned quite a reputation as an insurgent band. It took a whole orcish regiment to pacify the region, as such actions had given hope to the populace, and the local traitor prince feared he would face rebellion if swift preventive punishment was not set in motion. So it was that several villages were razed and people slain, only for fear that word of the brigand’s exploits might inspire the peasants to take arms against their rulers.

The band was not heard of anymore, until recently. Led by one young Erenlander by the nickname of Mormegil (“Black Blade”), they are actually just a bunch of untrustworthy individuals, practicing all sorts of crimes with no remorse, as long as it allows them to stay alive. It was Mormegil who taught them their dirty tricks, and they more than once successfully robbed many traveling legates or Shadow nobles, usually avoiding violence. Their favorite prey are gnome merchants, however, because these are rarely protected and carry precious cargo with them.

The populace thinks they are an insurgent band, and Mormegil lets them think he attacks gnome “collaborators” or legates as acts of resistance. He actually attacks them because they’re easy and rich targets. He does however give a share of the loot to nearby villages, not out of generosity, but to make sure they’ll keep silence about his activities and his identity. The discovery of such items by the local Shadow forces would actually mean the doom of the villagers. The peasants have not yet figured this, and usually even help the brigands hide when they are searched by the local garrisons.

As many believe them to be resistants, a few young men leave their homes to find them and join them. They are usually robbed and left naked, unless they prove their innate qualities as a “test” (which involves ugly fighting and unexpected craftiness, rarely found in stable boys). The brigands don’t kill their prey, however, for fear of being denounced. After such incidents, they quickly move to another area.

Mormegil was actually born as the son of one of Roland’s raiders. Cast away from the group for unknown reasons, he soon traded his noble behaviour for less savoury activities. His skills as a fighter and skirmisher soon earned him some fame as a bandit, and many others joined him in the next months: rapists, murderers, thieves, all of them had a heavy past and no willingness to amend. It was Mormegil’s dream to one day find redemption and turn his men into true insurgents, fighting for a noble cause.

He had almost reached his goal, leading by example, when they assaulted the caravan between Bastion and Zorgetch. Unfortunately, the ambush failed, and he needed all his tactical genius to win the battle, not after killing a soldier legate escorting the convoy. As part of his loot, Mormegil took the legate’s blade, which actually is a Black Blade from a Sword Brother (see “Forge of Shadow”). The death of the Sword Brother somehow changed the demonic spirit residing in the blade, which found this new master to be much more interesting. Sending dreams of revenge and glory, it slowly managed to take the better part of Mormegil’s personality, turning him into one of the vilest brigands. His fame attracted to him the worst scum of Eredane, who gladly joined his band.

Secretly, a small part of Mormegil still hopes for salvation, but his mind is slowly consumed by the demonic blade’s superior spirit. Murder after murder, he and his band are slowly succumbing to the embrace of Shadow, with delusions of grandeur. If nothing is done, one day they’ll sign as bounty hunters, and stage a deadly ambush against Roland’s raiders.

Mormegil: Dorn Fighter2/ Wildlander 2/ Rogue 5.

The Black Blade: each time it hits a person, the wielder must pass a Wil save (DC: 10+ damage inflicted to the victim). If this test fails, then the wielder is under the effects of a Charm person spell, and obeys the spirit that resides in the blade. This longsword gives a +2 bonus to hit, and for damage.

Good piece, smeagol, the name is direct Tolkien and not quite fitting for a Dorn, if you ask me, but other than that I like it.

Hiding from Shadow

Nif,

Yes the name is directly taken from the Silmarillion: it was Turin Turambar's nickname in his bandit days. "Mormegil" is not a Dorn name, but it's the character's erenlander "bandit name". No one knows his true (Dorn) name... which could provide interesting possibilities depending on the PCs' personal stories  twisted

'Turin Turambar Dagnir Glaurunga' Smiley

I love it Smeagol. Very very nice and a great mix of Tolkien and Midnight. Consider all this borrowed for my campaign !
