Hiding from Shadow

« Reply #50 on: March 21, 2008, 06:00:39 PM »

Allow me to insist on my view of things: I have only provided you with a list of places, and references for descriptions (in order to comply with the respect of FFG's IP).

Why not first choose a picture for each one of these places, using the wiki, (and each time a small map to show exactly WHERE in Eredane the place is - districts don't work for clarity IMHO, a good map with an "X" marker that shows the place is much better, at least for my tastes). When all places are given corresponding pictures and "maps" (and why not develop the description with key NPCs, story hooks, etc, while we're at it?), then we could make a nice pdf of it all and make it as "another TOS", downloadable on ATS.

Comments about this ambitious project?

I was toying for a few minutes with taking one of the images Darth Alkar posted and tweaking it a bit to use for my campaign - my gang might be entering the Bloody Tower soon.  So I've just made some minor changes.

I didn't think it needed to be overtly scary or anything...

Cool!
A place like that can be really scary even under the sun...  Wink

Regarding the wiki/gazeteer project ... I can't set up a wiki, but I'll be glad to contribute with the the search for pictures as soon as somebody puts this thing on.

Great!
You should list all of these under their appropriate areas on the wiki I've started below.

My thinking is that THIS is too difficult to "read".  A list in alphabetical order seems nice if you need to find something quick.  However, if you're a GM or player looking for EVERYTHING in the region you're in it makes much more sense to set it up by region.  It seems to me like THIS would be how most groups would need/use the image gazetteer...
I've listed out many of the regions and started listing in sites below each one on the wiki gazetteer I'm beginning (link below)

Awesome!
It's up.
PICTURING ARYTH: Image Gazetteer

I haven't loaded all of the images yet.  I did a sample for the Highhorn Mountains

I made it for a "general Midnight" wiki, then with a big section for doing this project.
Anyone want to start adding images?

An EASY thing to do is to go to "edit" the Highhorn page I started, then copy that wiki-mark-up format and just change the text and images when you make a new page for a new location.  Just be careful not to delete the original Highhorn information.

thoughts?

Looks great Kev. As soon as I have a chunk of time I'll start uploading some of the pictures from this thread to the Wiki.

I was thinking that it might be useful to put in a couple of sub-catagories for non-location-specific pictures, such as a category for "Temples of Izrador" (which could be anywhere)

Another good category for each location would be a Flora and Fauna section. The book details the common plants and animals in each area in text, but it would be pretty cool to have pictures.

What do you think?

Great!
Feel free to improve upon the page (anyone).

I look forward to folks going in and adding to the wiki gazetteer with names of places and such.  After looking back at the images now, I see that many of this pictures posted thusfar are NOT in the regions/cities I mentioned.  Adding places like the Burning Line and such will help alot.

If you can think of any better way to show the images on the pages themselves please fix it.
My thought was that loading them in as "thumbnails" to the right side of the page would allow anyone to upload any size image without needing to resize it for the page.  Then you can quickly scan down the page and click to blow-up the image needed.

I plan to use this for my game, showing the image on my screen as needed...
Just need them all loaded before Saturday.   Grin

Great great idea.
Go for it!!

I agree.
I'd love to see images of that stuff, since I'm a poor judge to imagine that myself.
My players would likely love seeing the "right" type of flora/fauna in imagery.

I just recently read, for example, that in the Green March near Dern's Hold and Giant's Face the  majority of the trees are hardwood Oak and Elm as opposed to the deeper Erethor's Maudrials  (not sure if that's a real tree)...

good thinking, who's interested in HELPING more?
If not - continue to post pix HERE.

New pics available here: http://picasaweb.google.com/oroyer

Feel free to use them as you wish for the "Picturing Eredane Project" (PEP) if you find that some are fitting.

I've found that searching the web for THE right picture, given the huge number of locations, is quite a real pain and consumes a lot of time.

Besides, there is always the IP issue of using someone's pictures who is not part of ATS.

I'd suggest gathering all pictures taken by ATS members as a starting base, so we wouldn't have this worry anymore. Think of this: many of us come from various parts of the worlds, and some also travel. This means a potentially huge "picture library", from which it would also be easier to draw pictures for this project.

What do you think of this? Let us keep this project alive!

I think I already worked to created a great place (wiki) that anyone can upload images to and update, to house all these images but no one ever replied/updated or helped to collect them...
PICTURING ARYTH: Image Gazetteer

I'm not meaning to sound snarky here, but for all the talk about how great an idea this is - not many people are willing to take an hour or two to help.  I'm growing tired of giving my time on projects like the (or THIS mirror/nexus map project) for the community and then getting little aid in return.  There are a few who support and aid  (and reply to my constant requests for GM advice)  and I REALLY REALLY appreciate that.
However, if you're reading this thread (and like the idea)  I think it'd be great if you offer some of your time to help.  Posting images to this thread is great, but "cataloging" is the next step.

If you don't know how to upload to a wiki,  there are lots of sources out there to learn.  If you can post HERE, then the learning curve to wiki is a 10 minute challenge.  Here are a few ideas on "how to" wiki:
How Stuff Works - Wikis
Wiki Mark-Up
More Wiki Mark-Up

Apologies... Please don't take this post in a hostile tone.
I only want to give back to my fellow fans through my love of Midnight and the RPG hobby overall, but at some point I'd like to have my time rewarded with some aid.
Hows that for tough love?  Wink

thanks for excusing my rant.

Loading things to the wiki is on my to-do list. I should be able to get to it within the next week or two. if i don't feel free to yell at me. it's good motivation.

Thanks man. Sadly, life gets lodged firmly between my ideas and their implementation. I'll get to this soon. I'd love to see what anyone else adds to the project in the meantime.

Sorry if my post was not well taken.

I was just trying to help on a method, but I realize that in the meantime I have not much contributed on this project.

I feel that I am not the right person to help here, both from lack of inspiration (a wiki does not inspire me that much) and lack of free time (I work 12 hours a day, and try to keep a social life, which leaves me far too little time).

I retire from this project, since my views are too different from kev's ones, and it is his idea in the first place.

Good luck and keep the good work going!

No.
Smeagol, your post wasn't taking poorly.  I didn't mean to point a finger of blame at you or anyone necessarily.  The project of gathering the images seemed/seems to be easy and fun for several people.  For the organization, I've just been unhappy that no one's tried to help after I did what I noted I'd do  (provide a starting point - wiki).

I'm not sure how you mean that your views differ from mine on this project.  I want to see images gathered to "show" what Aryth locations and things look like to aid GMs and Players in "picturing Aryth".  The next step (for me) is to organize them in a place other than randomly in this thread.
I reread but don't see what or how our "views" are different.

I also don't want to imply that this is "my" project.  I kicked it off, but many others have found a LOAD more images than I have.  I'm just a cheerleader, that's helping to get this project rolling again.

I'd love for you (and others) to continue contributing ideas and imagery, etc...
If I'm missing your intention for view of what this project is/should be - please explain.  Your idea might be better or at least an addition to the effort.

No problem. it's just that I wanted to make an illustrated gazetteer, as a .pdf document, instead of a wiki, which I am not comfortable with.

Actually, I wanted to make the following thing:

Step 1:: take the M2E regional maps, and list every location in every map, using my gazetteer for description. For each location, the place is listed in red on the regional map (included). Then, a picture for the corresponding landscape, but it could be a typical building for settlements. And the corresponding description, either from the right book, or as I wrote it when no book described the place.

Step 2: make the same thing for each regional map

Step 3: gather the whole thing, and add an alphabetical listing of each for easier reference.

That's very ambitious, very difficult to do and time-consuming. Yet that's what I'd like to do if I could. Problem is,  can't Sad

So, no worries, but I feel I'm not just up for the task, especially currently, as I'm quite busy with work, and try to keep a social life which leaves me too little time (and energy) for my rpg projectc. Well, I suppose you can't get everything you want in life... Wink

A great site to search for pictures.  There are some absolutely stunning photos of wilderness areas.

Useful for picturing Erethor in its diversity

Searches with "desert" (Asmadar, East Coast), "plains" (halfling lands, especialy one about african plains), "river" (gnome lands), "seashore" (Pellurian sea region), "hills"(kurgun dwarves' lands), "mountains" (Kaladruns and Highhorn) will likely bring also good results. Add "winter" to forest and moutains and you have erunsil lands Wink

Pictures from Scotland and Scandinavia are great for the Dorn lands. Italy often makes a good match for Erenland pictures. Etc.

Not dead if I'm readin' and you're postin'... or vice versa. As a relative newcomer to Midnight and these forums, a lot of these sorts of things are still waiting for my discovery. Now that you showed me this thread, I'd contribute... but I'd love to see the ideas youj mentioned, too!

Posts are light but I am here looking EVERY day. My own Midnight game is starting soon (thanks to a virtual desktop) and I might be tapping well's long left abandoned but its all new territory to me.

but definitely, keep on posting...nothing is dead if you keep posting...all most things need are a nudge to start rolling again.

Hi Lgaard and roccojr,

I don't have time for this project anymore.

But you can make it if you want, be wary though: searching for (free of rights) pictures "matching" places of Eredane might be time-consuming. Good luck if you're willing to carry on.
