It’s Been Fun

When I first saw the Midnight preview that Fantasy Flight Games released I wasn’t even that interested in Midnight as a setting. At that point I was happy with my game and where it was going. But when I saw the main rulebook sitting on the shelf of my local gaming store, I just had to take a look. I’m so glad that I did. After reading it cover to cover, I decided that if there wasn’t a fan site for the setting out there yet, I was going to go ahead, take the plunge, and create one.

After going through several designs and/or hosts, I finally decided on a color scheme and software to drive the site. Not long after, the site was launched and people started to slowly make their way in.

Now, I never really submitted much Midnight material to the site. I was more of a sounding board for ideas and offered some help and advice where I could. My first contributor was a guy named Judd Harris; he submitted the Midnight Adventure Hooks that helped give birth to a number of fledgling Midnight campaigns. Judd’s story hour about players who were navigating the dark path of the Legate helped inspire a Midnight source book a couple of years later.

This was a pattern that was going to continue for quite some time. The most active and talented contributors started, right before our very eyes, to become the authors of the Midnight setting. Many of these contributors are still authors for Midnight. Some have moved on to different things, but they still haunt the boards and give us some of their Midnight wisdom, from time to time.

Last year, I decided to move the website because I wasn’t happy with the level of service we were getting from the web host. It turned out to be a good move because the week after that happened their server went down and all data was lost. Luckily we saved a lot of the old material. I know it’s not all back yet, but I’m sure that Nif will take care of it.

It was during that transition that I realized, due to work and family commitments, that I simply didn’t have the time it would take to give Against the Shadow the attention that it deserves. Luckily, over the last couple of years, Nifelhein has been here to handle the site while I decided what to do.

Well, we’ve finally decided. As of this week, I am officially handing over Against the Shadow to Nifelhein’s capable hands. From day one he has been a loyal, hard working and good friend and I’d like to thank him for that. In fact I’d like to thank everyone here at Against the Shadow, old grognards and new. You guys ARE Against the Shadow.

Before I go, I wanted to thank a few people and say that I won't be disappearing entirely. I will still be lurking ... in the Shadow.

Greg Benage (for such a wonderful setting), Nifelhein (for all of his help), Rob Vaughn (for his input and help), Dirigible (for his incredible ideas and unique personality), Kane (for his wonderful ideas) , Judd Harris (for helping to get Midnight and Against the Shadow off the ground with his Adventure Hooks), and finally Iain Brogan (for Fury of Shadow and also being a good friend). '

Edit: I made a bit of an oversight here and forgot to mention Neo! I'm sorry man. My mind was in a million different places when I wrote this!. Thanks man! I know I'm probably missing someone else here and if I had, I apologize. I'm getting a tad senile in my old age  Wink

Thank you,
Todd Antill

Take a well deserved rest and stay in the shadows Todd. It was this site that inspired me to move forward with Darkness Falls, so I personally owe a lot to you and the other fine folks who kept this site going.

I am sad, this is a day we talked about quit a while ago but I never really wanted to see. But then, this shows that AtS is really a community and not only me or you, or anyone else. We have good ideas and great posts, but they only came around when we all exchanged our ideas and thoughts.

I hope to keep AtS going for a long time ahead, and that we will see muc more from you here Todd. Smiley

Well I know im not around much anymore, indeed very little (RL issues, some major upheavels, ongoing and otherwise), but when I saw an email in my inbox with the subject "End of an Era" from Ats, for a second there I found it hard to swallow and my heart heart missed a beat... I assumed the worse.. site was closing, someone had died, or Midnight was being shelved... natural born pessimist I guess lol.

Its been a hell of a ride under your management Todd, my old matey and I know we even discussed me takiong on the site some years back, before the move but I had in all honesty thought Nif had taken over the running of the site long back and doing a bang up job of it al in spite of his coursework (though im still waitign on ToS 2 buddy Smiley )

Also despite being one of the originals, so to speak I dont know whether to be hurt or relieved I didnt get an honorable mention  mrgreen Laugh  But im glad to hear you will still be around Todd, and joining me in the shadows for a bit of lurking Wink

Take care Todd!

Thanx for starting something so great for the Midnight community.  I believe this site was one of the main reasons Midnight has kept going, without it, it might have been canned by FFG like their other RPGs were.

I know how it is with Time and Real Life... I've been wanting to play Midnight for the last year, but there is just no time for it this year.  When Midnight first came out, I was so enthusiastic, but now it's just a matter of time.  Hopefully, this winter, I'll get to indulge myself in a long running Midnight campaign and maybe finish a C&C Conversion for it.

I see Midnight, just like the C&C community.  Without a community like AtS, the game suffers.  Fan's take it upon themselves to come up with Errata, new book ideas that work and most importantly, spread the word and keep the game alive.

Cheers!  Smiley

I too would like to Thank you for your contributions to this board, this community. While Midnight is a small niche in the interweb and gaming world. It is a very nice niche and is made not only nicer by the contributions on this site and a couple others, but kept alive. So, Thank you.

It has been ahrd to finish it because of my burn out with D&D 3.X but I am working on it at a somewhat steady pace. I still want to get it out. Wink

I believe this site was one of the main reasons Midnight has kept going, without it, it might have been canned by FFG like their other RPGs were.

Yeah, Todd should be blamed for that, without AtS there wouldn't be Fury, 2nd edition, Forge, heart, Destiny, Honor, Steel and a lot of other books written by people who started as posters on the site.

I shall not miss you, you dark hearted orc mother!  Forever you and your kind have plagued our forests and streams.  You have burnt the trees, poisoned the rivers and killed our children.  Nay I will not miss that force that drives the legates and brings foul winds to the lands.  I will not cry at the loss of such evil and dismay.  I rejoice to know that you have fallen to elven blades and that your blood now turns cold on the barren ground that you made from our forest.
You will not hear words of sadness from me but, I might drop by your house this week.

Todd, ATS was my home for some great years.  I bought the Midnight setting after I found your site and read some of the early posts.  Thousands of posts later, I still come back to my old haunts to watch some of the old hands and fresh blood breath fresh life into the setting.  Keep lurking in the Shadows and keep an eye on Nif from time to time.  He thinks he's a New Night King, but he's just another Traitor Prince.

I can honestly say that, like many others around here i guess, AtS was the thing that kept my Midnight interest always high. My first game was played almost a year after i bought the setting, my second game will start (hopefully) almost 2 years after the end of the first game... and yet, Midnight has me hard by the balls, and that is mainly due to this great site that you created and the good people that come here and share ideas.

Hope to still see you around from time to time, and I'm glad to know that the site is in the great and capable hands of Nif.

Todd, I just want to thank you for holding this site together.  Midnight is what it is because of a lot of people's efforts, but it is hard to imagine it would have happened without this place to come together for encouragement and inspiration.

So, thanks, and good luck.

Good work Todd. *pat on back* This is definetly the website I've spent the most time on, though I haven't come by much this summer.

I guess we're stuck with you now Nif Wink.

Although I'm currently mostly lurking here, ATS has been my home and family for quite some time. Thank you for that!
