Hello hello one and all! Long may the Shadow reig--

cough Wrong speech.

I am happy to re-engage with this community of Midnight fans, though life has become far more complicated for me since last I was active here.

There is a Facebook group of around 30 people. I don't think there's a Discord server. I want to see this community grow. Are there other Midnight communities that I'm not aware of?

I want to drum up interest in Midnight and center a community around Discord. I'm willing to do the technical work of creating, maintaining, and customizing the server. I would rather not take on the role of someone "in charge". I want to enable the community.

Is there interest in a Midnight Discord? If so, I will set it up and tap some contacts to perhaps get Edge Studio's support.

I prefer forums like this one to Discord, but would sign up and might participate on occasion if a Discord channel were set-up. Don't think I'm up for being a moderator/admin, though.

Thanks for (potentially) taking the lead in setting this up, Glacialis.

I haven't forgot about this. I'm also seeking a way to host the wealth of information on this site in the form of articles, blogs, etc on a different medium. Perhaps a wiki? We need something that can host static content well, and neither Discord nor this site's aging software is it.

I do still plan on creating a Discord server and getting it all spruced up. The issue, for those that are familiar with creating, maintaining, or configuring Discord bots? Discord made some big API changes and is forcing all bots to go to slash commands. Some of the ones that have worked the best for communities I ran in the past, well, they're not quite updated yet and there are a lot of developers who just don't have the time for that kind of overhaul. So, I need to find better tools. Not just for moderation which is relatively easy, but for community management and engagement and helping people find content.

Additional musings. Nothing here should be taken as the direction I'm thinking or suggesting.

One of the things I'm struggling with is synchronous versus asynchronous communities. That is, Discord versus forums.

Discourse is a modern and popular forums platform. I'm in no way suggesting Discourse. This blog post happens to be on their site, and I think they do a good job comparing and contrasting the two styles of communication.

https://blog.discourse.org/2021/05/discord-and-discourse-better-together/

A Discord community would have a purpose, but an asynchronous (forum?) community needs to exist, too. So I would like to have both, and a way for the two interact. For example, Discord could have a channel that lists new forum topics or wiki articles. And Discord messages with certain properties could also create form threads, where communication in either platform would show up in the other.

Morning thoughts.

Glad you're still thinking about how to make this all work, Glacialis. Your tech knowledge is far superior to mine, so I unfortunately am not in much of a position to help. I do agree with the idea of maintaining a forum and knowledge/file repository, in addition to a Discord channel. Wish I wasn't such a simpleton, so I could provide more assistance.

I was thinking recently that Edge really needs to do more to push Midnight... but what? Clearly, fan enthusiasm and more visible/active fan sites are also key to the line's ongoing success.

Thanks for your thoughts TwiceBorn. Smiley It's not so much the tech that I'm conversating about here, so much as different community building methods. I'm not sure which way to go, you know?

I do wish Edge would invest more energy in stirring up fans. We're here and we want to be stirred up, dang it! 😁
