I was curious if anyone had any thoughts on this: Are there any ways to block an Astirax from detecting the use of magic?

I originally house-ruled that they suffered many of the same restrictions as Detect Magic or Locate Object: Several feet of stone or earth, an inch of metal, or a thin sheet of lead would be enough to prevent detection. (Primarily to explain why the location of the Dwarven holdfasts haven't all just been picked out by a handful of legates wandering the mountains looking for magic items). This also gave them the ability to safely carry a few magic items with them, and stash them outside of a town before entering by putting them in a lead-lined container. This only holds up until the Astirax has line-of-sight to the containers, at which point they notice that there's a magic-blocking container and can draw their own conclusions.

To counter their now-weakened abilities from the rules as written, I also gave them a magical "scent" ability. They can follow the trail of anyone who's cast magic for 1 day per spell level, after which the scent fades. No mundane means can disguise this path, though anything that can be used to suppress an aura could be used to suppress their "scent" instead. I felt like generally this created a more exciting gameplay aspect, since now the players are being tailed, and any use of magic to speed up escape only ensures they'll be tracked longer.

Any thoughts on this?

Hmm, seems an interesting take and a more mundane way of dealing with it while still keeping it dangerous.

There are several ways to block Astirax: Magic Aura (duration 1 day/level), as well as several class features if I recall correctly (so I guess if I were able able to create magic item after Izrador victory, imbuing them with permanent Magic Aura would be a no-brainer)

Tomas Baden has a chest in 'glass miror' (?) ('verre miroir' in the french translation) where he stashes his magic items, so 'some' materials block the detection

Now, the description of Astirax states that physical barriers don't stop the detection. I've always got the impression however that astirax knew the general location, but pinpointing was hard/impossible, and once within 750 yard of the magic items, well that was it, they know someting is nearby, but it just permeates the air everywhere, so unless they really get their nose right on it...

Knowing there's a dwarf holdout in a 3 km radius is nice, but if it's BENEATH you (and some are even deepper I think), well digging-up a mountain is possible, but you better be patient (and the kaladrunes are not that welcoming). In the  same way, you know there's at least one magic item in an old castle, but overturning every stone ... well this is a good assignement for a legate who displeased his superiors
