It was Dorin's fault.

The group slowly made their way down the slippery embankment guided by Kjellan, keeping a hand on Dunk's rope and listening to his voice.

When the big dorn slipped, even the combined weight of the entire rest of the group wasn't enough of an anchor. Instead of everyone pulling Dorin back up, he pulled them down.

Only Ivy was able to let go and dive free of the tangled avalanche of arms and legs that painfully bounced down the hill and slid to a heap at the base of the ruined trade house.

She began feeling her way down to help the others when her sharp ears caught something, just barely, over the roar of the waterfall.

There were things in the darkness, and they were laughing.

Everything had happened in slow motion. Dorin had rushed past her, and she remembered wondering what his hurry was, especially on these icy rocks. Then she had realized that he wasn't rushing; he was falling, and he would pull them all down. The rope whipped past her, and she snapped her arms away just before they were almost tangled in the line. She turned around to see bodies rushing towards her as if they had all decided at once that it would be easier to fly down the slope, and she was the last to know. She vaulted over the rock to her right, into a patch of snow on the other side. She tried reaching out to catch a cloak, a boot, something. But they were already gone.

It was taking what seemed like hours to get to the bottom by herself. She nearly slipped several times, every muscle twitching and working overtime to stabilize her. The rocks laughed at her, mocking her slow, clumsy efforts. She paused (but not too long!) to collect herself and clear the voices.

They didn't stop. Someone was actually laughing. More than one someone, and she doubted any of her companions would be laughing after a tumble like that, if they were even still alive. She tried to freeze, but it was impossible to stop the shivering and her muscles ached to move again out of sheer over-stimulation. She lowered her profile behind the nearest stone and worked her bow free, scanning the darkness.

Dunk felt the pulse on the line as he held it.  He knew what it meant, but some part of his instinct made him hold tighter, trying to stop what was about to happen. If it had been one of the small folk he might have been able to stop them, but his eyes momentarily caught sight of the Dorn, showing him what fate awaited, before that fate caught up to him and dragged him down the icy slope.

At the bottom, once everything had stopped, he took account of his bruises.  He slowly stood up asking, "Anyone badly hurt?  Can everyone walk?" before the sight of Ivy with her bow out stopped him and sent the hair on his neck standing up.

Before he could react, Kjellan felt himself getting yanked off the slippery rock face, then free-falling a good distance down the sheer slope from the top of the pass, landing hard on his pack with a loud thud and ringing of metal as his helm banged against the ground.

The dwarrow's head was spinning, his heart racing… He was certain that he must have broken something.

It took him a few moments to sit up and get his bearings. He rubbed elbows and wrists and the back of his head, feeling for bumps, breaks or sprains. He winced as he did so. The pack had absorbed some of the impact, but he nonetheless felt tremendous pain flaring just about everywhere… through his back, his shoulders his head… but he was relieved to find nothing broken or sprained...

The ground was so cold, Kjellan could feel the chill seeping through his aching bones.

There was a ringing in his ears.

He thought he heard someone laughing… was he delirious?

Then he heard Dunk.

"I… I think I'm… alright… Uncle… but… is… somebody… laughing?"

He tried to look around for the source of the laughter, tried to figure out where the rest of his companions were… Were they alright?

Mandag had already hated the cold. It could be just as demoralizing as it was uncomfortable. Times like this made him glad for the tunic he wore, as he was reminded of the small comfort it brought.

But the cold could also bring danger. He knew it would be unlikely for the group to make it down the icy hill without some sort incident. He saw Dorin lose his footing, and felt the sudden pull of the rope. He knew what happens next.

As he tumbled down the hill he could feel the every bump as the ice and stone impacted his body. Old bruises were reaggravated, and new ones were probably made as well. As they neared the bottom, He struggled to regain his footing and exert some amount of control against the hill. He finally caught a break as his momentum dissipated and was able to roll to his feet.

He surveyed his companions as he rose from a crouch. His body ached, and the cold was only making it worse. Nearly everyone had been brought down in the fall, thought no one looked to be exceedingly worse off than anyone else. He shook his head and pulled himself together. That's when he noticed the laughing.

He gazed out into the darkness looking for the source of the sound, but he saw nothing. Turning back towards the group, he spoke softly. "I don't like this. We need to keep moving."

With that, he made towards the women and Eirik, to help them to their feet.

Eirik recalled the sudden tugging from the rope and the moment of helplessness as he was pulled from his precarious perch and thrown onto the unforgiving mix of icy and rocky outcroppings below. The air had been knocked from his lungs and he thought that something might have cracked on the way down.

He lay for a few seconds among the pile of groaning bodies quickly checking himself. His hands were cut and suddenly very cold bits of ice were jammed into them. But nothing seemed too badly damaged either.

Not good. He thought to himself. But not as bad as it could have been.

He gently scraped his hands free of some of the ice and when Mandag came over to give him a hand up, he gratefully accepted it. Not catching on to what he meant immediately, Eirik responded.

"Not sure anyone likes falling. Is everyone okay?"

The growing fatigue, the dangerous climb in the dark, the falling temperatures, they were nothing compared to the sheer terror of falling. Once the rope’s pull took them, Siobahn was sent flailing down the hillside, every jarring impact pounding away at not only her body but her spirit, not knowing which way was up, where Amethyst or the others were in the utter chaos, nothing but pain and falling and then cold.

Overwhelming cold. It seeped into her bones, tried to snuff the fire inside her. The cold felt like a poison working its way through her body, wearing away at her will to continue. She forced herself to stand, shaking violently, the cold doing her more harm than the fall almost overcoming reason with the need to start a fire.

She couldn’t stop shaking, couldn’t get warm.

“I….I..I..t..t..th..think s…s…so” she managed to force from lips beginning to turn blue.

Ivy's eyes scanned the barely-visible ridges of the rocks and the crevices of the ruins and stony walls that wrapped the basin of Kurgun Falls. She was suddenly thankful for the snow on the ridges and the shine of the ice that gripped everything below the ridge line itself. Without it she never would have noticed the faint movement across the slope of the pass.

It occurred to her suddenly, with a chill that had nothing to do with the bitter cold, that she was alone at the top of the hill.

The thing that moved began to rush across the top of the pass, braving the open space in a mad rush. She fired, and hit it, but it barely slowed. As it closed and she fumbled for another arrow, she caught the dull red glow in it's oversized eyes.

That was when she was hit from behind and went down in a tangle of icy, spindly limbs that held her in a grip of iron.

Whatever had her didn't pin her joints sufficiently. That was a mistake. She curled her body and twisted, almost like she was trying to turn herself inside out. The mountain wall went spinning past her as  she flipped herself and it over. "It" was another Fell goblin like the one that had stared back at her across the path. If she slit its throat, the other one would have just enough time to be on top of them both. The sure footing and quick reaction was a double-edged sword. She had been "lucky" enough to avoid the tumble down the mountain, only to find herself in more danger than anyone. Ironically, only the darkness ahead, where her friends had disappeared, offered even a flicker of hope. Time to cut with the other edge.

The goblin sank it's teeth into her forearm while she tried to hold it away from her and then drug it's ragged claws across her face. The second goblin raced across the pass, nearing her and beginning to reach out when Ivy suddenly pushed off and dragged her grappling assailant with her. Her stomach lurched with the drop and then the first impact stole her breath. The goblin's head bounced off hers leaving a putrid trail of slime across her cheek and forehead. Then they were rolling, sliding, airborne again, then slammed to the icy ground, pulled apart by the impact and then together by mutually grasping hands and anger. Stone cracked her left elbow leaving her arm twitching and numb. The goblin's hand swatted her across the face, grabbing at her hair but she managed to yank away as they went over again. They slid for a patch, dragging and pushing against each other, vying for position but unable to get any purchase as the ground ripped itself out from under them, caking them both with frost. Then they hit a large rock, the goblin absorbing most of the impact, twisting them both as they spun like rag dolls past it and out into empty air for a moment, again.

Dunk and Kjellan spun at the same time to see faint flickers of yellow from Ivy's cloak as she tumbled end over end, grabbing at something, rolling then finally sliding to a halt about ten feet short of the pile of groaning refugees. She came to a halt riding the thing like a sled, one knee in it's chest and a hand around it's throat. It was thrashing hard, but one of it's limbs looked broken and the back of it's head was leaking rotted blood all over the ice.

Dunk's instincts took over and his head whipped around, noticing the faint red pinpricks of Fell eyes moving in from the rocks.  He counted a dozen pairs in a fraction of a moment. One looked right at him  from only a few paces away where it crouched amid the rubble of the old trade house. It knew it had been spotted. There was no reason for stealth any longer. It joyfully gave into it's hunger and rushed in, howling an unearthly rasp that carried over the roar of the falls.

Others echoed the cry, and came, their red eyes flaring and surging forward toward their prone prey. They remembered how they had died.

It was time to return the favor.

Her gamble had paid off, except for the searing pain on her cheek, the bitter cold in her bones, and the seriously harsh throbbing in her thigh. But she was alive. In the fall, her bow had managed to get around the goblin's head and the shaft now rested on its neck. Her strength felt depleted but she was still able to shift her knees out and forward until it they were resting on the bow's shaft on each side of the goblin, pinning it to the icy ground. It was spewing and spitting as it struggled. It was hurt but still very, very dangerous. "Some...some help here! Now would be good!"

Spinning around as Ivy called out, struggling with her assailant, Eirik had only a second to try and take in the scene before the echoing cries of the Goblins could be heard all around. Or rather, he would have liked to see what was going on in front of him but he could hardly make out anything beyond dim shadowy figures.

Concern mixed with fear for Ivy but he would have just likely ended up being useless in the dark. So, he decided to push it back. He grabbed for a rock nearby, it was a risk, it always was but their immediate situation called for it. He called upon that familiar inner spark of magic he had learned a long time ago and made the rock glow.

Ivy's tumble down from the pass astride an undead goblin, followed by her call for aid, roused Kjellan from his state of disorientation. He seized Woden's axe and charged to the elfling's aid, ignoring the pain that wracked his own body.

"To Ivy!!! But beware, everyone… more Fell closing in!!!"

The flare of light was jarring and revealed low forms with long arms and legs hurling themselves along the ground, leading with wide mouths with too many teeth. The light reflected dully in dead eyes. Many had broken off arrows sticking out of heads or hearts and skin ripped and frostbit. Some still wielded weapons and wore shreds of armor. Others were simply feral in death, reaching with shredded fingers toward the refugees. Their hunger came before them like a wave.

Reaching out to help Amethyst up from the freezing slush, Siobahn tried desperately to resist the cold. As the flare of Eirik lighting a rock brought to light the horrors approaching them, her last concern over betraying their position with light evaporated, The Ashblade flaring into her hands with a sizzle and a hiss of steam.

Dunk heard Kjellan call out and move to help Ivy.  However he turned away from her, showing her his back as he focused on the creature he saw beside him.

As the light flared around them, his hands grabbed the Sun and the Moon, and his eye focused on the closest creature.

Upon finally coming to a halt, Amethyst frankly welcomed an excuse to lie still for a few moments.  However sore and cold she was, the chance to just stop moving for a little while seemed one to relish.

Then the reactions of the others alerted her to the latest crisis, and she began to bestir herself.  Even so, without Siobhan's helping hand, it might well have taken her rather longer to struggle herself and her heavy pack into an upright position - but with the assistance of her staff and her athletic friend, she swiftly regained her feet.

A slight whimper escaped her throat as the Ashblade came to life, but she moved to try to cover Siobhan's back, both trusting her friend to fight effectively and fearing that the warrior might do so without regard to her own safety.

Momentarily, she wondered if this might be a time to brandish Hope once more - but did her best to banish a thought motivated far more by her own fear of horrors in the dark than by truly practical considerations.

Mandag could only faintly make out exactly where Ivy was, but he heard her call for help and rushed towards her none the less.

Running forward, he used the small amount of momentum he had gathered to level a kick into the fell goblin that Ivy was grappling with.

Dorin finally caught his breath. The fall had not been kind to the big Dorn, his own weight working against him to drive the breath from his lungs, but he was recovering at last. His frustration and anger at himself for causing the whole debacle burned hot in his chest, and he felt it fueling the inner fire of his battle rage. He stepped forward, unslinging his newly acquired hammer from his back. "Get behind me!" he bellowed, raising the weapon, ready to strike.

Dunk's uteruk founds it's mark, slamming into one of the onrushing Fell goblins. The impact of the blow caused it to lose it's footing on the slippery ground. It scrabbled and was overtaken by it's fellows. The new leader of the pack took a sling bullet in the chest. It didn't slow. It jumped over the one on the ground and dove right towards Dunk only to be met by a powerful swing from Dorin's new hammer. The big Dorn batted the creature away like a rag doll, sending it spinning across the slick rocks. Dorine planted himself in front of the others in time for three more Fell to crash into him, climbing up his body and tearing into his flesh.

Light flared up from Eirik's hand making everyone wince and the fell hiss and shy back for a moment. The light revealed a goblin coming in from behind them, leaping toward Amethyst as Siobhan helped her up. She ducked and the creature was impaled on Ashblade, it's wound sizzling as Siobhan tossed it to the side. It immediately leaped up again, raking her across the arm.

Kjellan's axe found purchase in the Goblin beneath Ivy's skull, but even burying the great blade in it's face did not stop it. It reached and spat, cracking it's own skull further with the fury of it's struggles. Mandag planted a hand on Kjellan's shoulder and tucked his body into a sideways twist that had him landing on the other side of Ivy, swinging his leg into a wicked kick that crashed into the side of the Fell Goblin's head. The impact of the kick torqued the axe in it's head enough to crack the skull completely, leaving the body twitching and thrashing mindlessly.

Another came in from the trade house ruins leaping onto Siobhan, wrapping it's limbs around her and sinking it's teeth into her shoulder. Another scrambled up Mandag from behind, but he expertly flipped the thing over it's shoulder, slamming it to the ground next to Ivy.

Four more crawled out of the icy river and began running towards Dunk and Wendle. Still more were rushing towards Dorin. to join the ones who were already trying to pull him down.

Wendle was cursing and looking around. "Nowhere to go! F*%&!"

Eirik's eyes took a moment to adjust as the light came into being but he quickly made out the forms of the attacking Goblins. Seeing that Mandag and Kjellan had helped Ivy, he pulled his vardatch free and moved to swing at the one grabbing onto Siobhan.

"We're too exposed here. We need to get to cover!" he yelled. "We might be able to force our way to the trade house!"

Nefario stood up a bit dazed at first, but he didn't expect anything less after rolling to the bottom of the icy hill.  He got up and quietly growled frustratedly.

If its not one thing its another.

He ran closer to Ivy and flung his knife into the goblin which was just slammed onto the ground by Mandag.

"Close ranks!" yelled Kjellan. "And let's slowly make our way, a few feet at at time, as a group toward the trade house! Look after one another!"

Kjellan was putting on a brave front, feeling responsible for the safety of his companions now that he had assumed the mantle of thane… but he was very worried. He still felt winded, battered and exhausted and knew that it would not take much for the fell to bring him down. In his padded armour, he felt particularly vulnerable.

The dwarrow was torn between rushing to Dorin's aid, as the human was being overwhelmed by the scourge, and standing by his father's side. He took a few careful steps toward Wendle, holding Woden's axe out protectively with one hand as he reached into one of his pouches with the other, searching for the mystic pearl that Woden had given him all those arcs ago. All the while, he felt the dead thanes whispering their guidance to him, filling him with unknown powers channeled through the mithril helm he wore. His fingers closed on the smooth sphere, which he promptly placed under his tongue, praying silently that it still held some of its power.

Kjellan's eyes narrowed on one of the three undead that was on Dorin, then he bellowed out a command in what he hoped was the Black Tongue:

"YOU!!! FIGHT FOR US!!!"

With a sharp hiss of pain Siobhan slashed at the goblin that bit her, the Ashblade's runes like a candle being waved in the darkness. She moved to take best advantage of Amethyst's assistance while keeping herself between her friend and any attackers and slowly moving in the direction Kjellan indicated.

As the urutuk returned to his hand, Dunk smiled grimly. A good weapon for a fight like this.

Dunk stepped between Wendle and the on-rushing head, and braced his shield, holding the Sun at the ready.
