It's alright Ilona. Again, I'm just glad there's enough of you still hanging around to make the game worth it to run for. Also sorry for the tortuously long scenes we have here. When creativity takes over, I like showing these moments even if it apparently drags a locations time frame over a much longer period than necessary.

Dunkin, Amethyst, Siobhan, the three of you are handed vials that shine with a powerful bright Golden light. Fedwyn calls them vials of Father Sun's Blood

A few details of this are located in the Book of Relics section now.

Dunkin, for allowing an aging smith to examine your clan heirlooms up close you have reignited his purpose. He has now bestowed upon you Improved Masterwork, Advanced Tempering, Fire Forged Chain Shirt and Large Steel shield.

These items gain an additional +1 to their maximum dexterity bonus allowed, + 1/5th their usual hardness, in this case +2 for each as they're made of steel, they're both immune to any fire damage they might otherwise receive, and finally, the chain shirt grants you Fire resistance -2, while the Steel shield grants a +2 on all saving throws against fire.

Finally; your charm ring has been repaired, but perhaps some remaining flaw has cost some of its original power. The true charm now simply gives a +1 on all reflex saving throws.

Siobhan and Amethyst: For helping to save the Dwarven warrior Badel's life, you have earned the gratitude of his elder brother and  master jeweler. You both receive ancient looking, but well kept Improved Masterwork Silver Cedekus. These Cedekus have old writings on them, Linguistics roll Dc 20 to translate, chiseled in old Courtier. Both weapons have a non-magical +1 to attack and damage rolls (The damage rolls offset the -1 damage from Alchemically silvered weapons. So it will just be +1 to hit and normal damage.)
In addition, you gain repair materials for the silver lock around the book. Also you gain Improved Masterwork lock picks, granting a total of +4 to any disable device checks. These items are also particularly difficult to bend or break and have an additional +1 hardness and +10 hit points.

Everyone: For rescuing Golan and the remainder of his squad, and making a good show of yourselves while within Pardrum Holdfast, You receive Masterwork versions of any equipment you can think of to have dropped off with the Dwarves here, assuming it was at least, mostly, made of metal. Also, from the adoration and love you seemed to be getting at least from about 2/3rd's of the hold, you gain an additional stock of 65 days worth of trail rations. Mostly consisting of mushrooms, a strange barley-like substance, and an undefined sort of meat. Although most of the supply came from the first two sources, and a small quarter cask of ale.

Dorin Stealth: This dice roll has been tampered with!
Rolled 1d20+2 : 19 + 2, total 21

Right, well Dorin was the lowest stealth modifier in the group, so you guys manage to easily get by the Orcs patrolling the few areas at the time.

Congratulations, now I'm just going to fast forward past the next several days and through some otherwise trivial encounters. I will have you guys deposited outside of the mountains.

Whew! That took a long time but now you guys are officially past what I felt to be the most railroaded parts of the plot. From here on out, it's going to be what you choose to do. Time will pass in the world, there are some events that will come and go depending on how fast/short of a time frame you take. For those of you familiar with Crown of Shadows, you know the basic path the current plot thread unfolds, but it's going to be a bit more free form. You still have an overall task but now it's your show.

From this point onward your party will shrink with the passing of time as opportunity and circumstances allow which will help with my sanity in as far as running the game.

But once again, I must call out:

Useless, but trying to be here in spite of RL continuing to be the bane of relaxation and attention span.

Trying to catch up yet again.

And grovelling for forgiveness yet again.

As a brief summary: I'm still ill, Mum's now in a different hospital, I'm trying to provide updates for her extended family, and my better half and I are still dealing with the aftermath of moving home in the midst of this.

But if it'd help, I can give my email address so that people can kick me directly whenever I get distracted.  Though I've not been providing evidence of it for the past year or so, I really do value this game and enjoy the characters.

Edit: Good grief, did I have a lot to catch up on.  Sorry again for missing so much (I feel guilty about Nefario's fears, but delighted for Fedwyn!).  And thank you, Luiniel, for keeping going with this. Smiley

A couple of queries, Luiniel.  Amethyst can give herself a blodged-together Factotum version of Identify (+10 bonus for studying magic, for a total of +20) and have a shot (once each day) at identifying the detailed properties of Dola's gift to her.  Of course, depending on quite what their nature is, this might not help - but it's worth a go.

Also... we now have some rather special lock picks, it seems.  I could potentially have a shot at opening up Grandfather's book, if Siobhan wanted to give that another try.  Given time to Take 20 and spend an Inspiration point, I could hit a total of 33 on Disable Device (before any bonus for the lockpicks).  I seem to recall that it was at least DC 30, so this still might not be enough!

Hmm, alright. Yeah, a direct way to kick up interest may be very helpful overall.

Not that I have too much room to talk as I've been pretty quiet on the boards the last few weeks.

Belatedly, I've spotted the post above about inscribed cedeku with a DC20 Linguistics check wanted to translate what's on them - that set me to searching through my equipment list for other oddities.

Amethyst only has pidgin-grade Courtier (not enough to be functional; it's one of those nasty complex languages), but can at least read its alphabet (and is fully fluent and literate in Colonial).  She'd quite willingly help Siobhan have a shot at translating the cedeku: Siobhan's on an effective Linguistics of +5 (Int +2 with 3 additional languages at full fluency), so given time could probably get there; if you're feeling generous, Amethyst might be able to Aid Another on the attempt.

A short-cut's offered by the mirror that Grandmother gave Amethyst, which tends to reveal the truth of things: Grandmother explicitly said that it revealed the truth of words reflected in it (though that might not necessarily be a word-for-word translation, especially if it's poetically phrased - we've not actually tested it yet to see precisely what it does with text).

Amethyst also still has squirrelled away "5 unidentified charms" and a baseball-sized agate that 'resonates' for Siobhan.  If there were a chance to get a channeller or loremaster to join the smiths in helping us in the holdfast, then they could potentially resolve those long-standing mysteries.  And if you want not to worry about the mystery charms, then they could be things that Amethyst thought would better-suit the dwarves (charms for brewing mushroom beer, maybe!) and made a gift of them to their hosts.

The agate, however, she's very much inclined to hang onto as a gift for Siobhan, unless the dwarves can provide good reasons not to (e.g. if its purpose is to control naturally-occurring lava and they can tap some to defend the holdfast, then it's all theirs!).

If Sibohan's up for it, I'll definitely also have a shot at getting into Grandfather's book: with the masterwork lockpicks and time to Take 20 (and spend an Inspiration point), I think I can hit DC37.  I know the DC was previously at least 30, so that might still fall short - but it's worth a go!

As for equipment upgrades... could the dwarves boost my alchemy gear or the group's healing supplies?  Amethyst does most of her alchemy in a cooking pot; she's not remotely strong enough to get laden down with any sort of laboratory, but could she potentially get some higher-grade kit to help at least a little?  And stuff like proper scalpels, etc, for a party healing kit could be very worthwhile.  But if they're remotely short of either, Amethyst won't want to deplete their reserves.

To add another thing to my litany of queries....

Is there any indication of whether Fedwyn's intended to travel on with us, or return to the holdfast?  Has she seemed to be part of our escort, or one of those being escorted?

Ah, sorry if that wasn't made entirely clear earlier by various in-game details. Dunkin would certainly know.

From what you have been able to gather, Fedwyn is a Dworg which in traditional Dwarven sense are outcasts from their race and are often ridiculed and abused because of their birth. Some of them are either killed when they are born or sent out of the holdfast the moment they are deemed able to move about on their own. As Dworgs come to adulthood surprisingly fast from their Orcish heritage, and in addition are a naturally strong, tough, and remarkably resilient race this can happen very early on in their life.

Fedwyn was in a sense, luckier than some. She got more of the typical treatment of Dworgs and was merely an outcast left to her own devices. Because of your meddling with her life, she has joined the party. It is unlikely she will ever return of her own volition to a holdfast and she will never try to join one. It hasn't become openly apparent yet, but Amethyst has won herself a dedicated follower (effectively a cohort) who will do almost anything for her.

I mentioned this before but she is currently a 1st level barbarian. (Soon to be 2nd level) If you would like to have a say in her development as a character, just say so.

Ah, I adore it when my players start making future plans.

As far as planning for Fedwyn's future, if you want to start training her in the ways of combat, now would be the opportune time.

There are going to be days, possibly weeks of downtime for you all to train while you move. Remember to go over the rules for training up Vitality points and let me know if you want to do that, although be wary about your amount of foodstuffs you have at your disposal. Extra tough training requires more sustenance. Which reminds me, as a final parting gift from your Dwarven allies, they handed you a two bags worth a total of 42 more days worth of trail rations. Almost all of it is salted Ort meat and mushrooms but it will suffice.

Can we do any foraging while moving at a good speed cross-country?  It seems like even just a very occasional extra man-day of food could be worthwhile.  Amethyst's accustomed to being able to help to sustain herself while tramping around Central Erenland... but that wasn't while trying to do a fast march across the whole width of it.

And hooray for training Fedwyn. Smiley

Fedwyn's disposition is toward being a Barbarian at the moment, but training her towards Fighter or Wildlander would be simple enough. Anything else is going to require a lot more work.

As for the foraging for food, Central Erenland during the summer months is not easy, simpler than Souther Kaladruns but only by a small amount. Normally you'd be having to slow down to half speed in order to try and forage without penalties.  Doubling the time it would take for cross country traveling. Successfully foraging for a party of that size is going to be tough no matter how you slice it, and doing so at normal speed is going to be harder than usual. Probably somewhere in the vicinity of a -5.

So I started to type my response to Nefario, and went back to read the very beginning, looking for the point where we first wet through Swift Water. Aside from having forgotten all the craziness we've been through, Nafario's the one who found me as a 5yr old and took me to Constance. While we're not close, he knows more about me that anyone I haven't told (which is pretty  much everyone other than Grandfather, Constance and Amethyst......and my parents up to a point).

So he knows exactly where I'm from. Might be a point you missed.

I was using Fuchsia for a long time but I recently made the switch to hot pink. You just need to make it look like this: hotpink

I suppose we could always say they're slight variations of dialect. One being fluent as your natural language and the other being someone who has learned it through time and study.

Ack! Something that was very much mentioned by you but somehow I missed it from before, you had completely stated your intention to open the book. After working with the Dwarves in the holdfast, you had Amethyst's Grandfather's notebook. The lock had been meticulously cleaned and repaired which as lowered the DC for opening it. It is now overly extreme at Dc. 30 rather than the absurd 37 for being dirty and moderately corroded.

As for some smaller mysteries:

Dola had enough supplies for more than 1 alchemist lab in her abode. She was definitely willing to give you enough supplies to let you have a traveling kit. It won't provide the full +2 bonus but you won't take any penalties and if the proper conditions are set, you could get a +1 equipment bonus out of it.

The hodgepodge Identify definitely works and the things you have are:

Dola's gift - Blood of Father Sun. Stoppered in metal containers, these vials contain the liquefied essence of the Sun. When unstopped, it acts as a Daylight spell but with all of the effects of True Daylight. Imbibing the potion is said to temporarily enhance the creature in a number of unique ways but so far these remains a mystery.

The Agate - This stone resonates with an inner warmth and is particularly active when Siobhan is near. The stone is in fact an Elemental Gem keyed to fire.

The five charms you all have are - Lesser Charms: Grass cat- Break to gain a +2 to all Stealth checks for 1 minute. x2, Leopard - Break to gain a +2 on all reflex saving throws  for 1 minute.
Greater Charms: Intricately carved monkey - Break to gain a +2 on all climb checks for 10 minutes. Horse - Gain the effects of the Endurance feat for 1 hour.
