new to making charicters

So I’m relatively novice at dnd, I am starting a new campaign and need to create a level 7 charicter, how do I go about doing this? I get the rolling of 4d6 for the basic charisma dex etc? also the totals for the best 3d6 do I take them as my actual totals, thing is, what happens if I have 6 terrible rolls? Also how much do I add to each one for every level increase? Or is there an easier way of doing it, for example by level 7 you have 100 points to spend across your dex, con, wis …
Any help would be appreaciated…

Hey Dobbs, welcome to the boards.
There are a few ways to create characters. You can start off by rolling 4D6 and taking the highest 3 numbers, which is generally considered the best way of creating more heroic PC's. Occasionally, the dice just hate you and you get a character who's highest stat attribute is a 10 or lower. This is a very rare thing but if this happens you could try asking your game master if you can re-roll your stats or have them do it, I generally let my players re-roll if they don't have at least 2 scores of at least 13 or if their total stat modifiers are less than +1.
You get to add a +1 to any stat score you have for every four levels your character gains.
Another way to do this is by using the point buy system. First the game master decides whether it's going to be a low or high fantasy game. This determines the number of points the characters get to assign to their characters ability scores which would all start at 10 and the points cant put your starting number higher than 18. The stat points cost a number equal to 0 + their stat modifier. 11-13 cost 1 point, 14-15 cost 2 points, 16-17 3 points, 18 4 points. Players could also sell down their attributes if they wished to attain more points but cannot sell their starting ability scores below 7. Racial modifiers are added after all points have been spent.
Point cost:
11=1 point, 12=2 points, 13= 3points, 14= 5points, 15= 7points, 16=10 points, 17= 13 points, 18= 17 points.
Example: Low fantasy-15 points, Standard Fantasy-20 points, High fantasy-25 points, Epic fantasy-30 As always the Game master is the final arbiter on what the rules are and can feel free to alter these numbers to whatever they desire.
As for what the character is good at, deciding party role is generally a good way to go about it before assigning attribute points. Front line characters would want high Strength and Constitution, support characters usually want a good Dexterity, Spell-casters are dependent on a high spell-casting stat, Intelligence, Wisdom , Charisma. Although at 7th level your character should be a very powerful individual regardless of their stats.
