"Inch towards daylight"

« Reply #1226 on: February 11, 2018, 06:34:22 AM »

Xein sighed but understood his brother's impatience. They were getting close to home again. Which meant the pack was close too. Though they both knew they wouldn't be able to return until bidden by Lord Skinner or they had successfully finished with the rest of their mission. They had never been without the pack for so long. Although Xein was completely different and Rash'Gar was of a new breed, they had both been accepted by the Alpha as members of the pack. Lord Skinner had seen to that.

The night of the wagon chase flared into the Elfling's mind as he'd finally hit the familiar grassy home territory. The victory should have been theirs. The pack had been there with the Alpha leading it. They'd caught up to the wagon. Never had the pack lost before when their prey had been in hand. But then they'd managed to escape. He'd watched, wounded but hidden from above, as the elven witch had cast her spell to make the horses move much faster than they should have been able to. The Alpha male trampled along with several other pack members. Then the alpha female had howled, calling off their pursuit.

Then later at the Dwarven fortress of Durgis Rock. They should not have escaped there either. He'd struck against the elven witch, wounding but not killing her. Then that other Elfling, Ivy, had shot him in the head with an arrow.

He'd been lucky, it had been a glancing blow but had stunned him and left a scar along his forehead which he rubbed at.

At Rash'Gar's prompting, Xein was pulled out of his thoughts and the group moved along after the Gnollgren heading westward.

Plains of Erenland Late Summer
Just over 9 days later, Rash'Gar was beginning to gain a sense of familiarity with the plains and could sense the changing of the season was nearing. But this morning he sensed something else, it was distant even to his keen senses, he could smell smoke in the air. And more so, there was the faint scent of blood.

Aliya would trust Rash´Gars judgement. He was a good tracker . Better than any others she had med. She personally would prefer to go west. Water was a compelling argument. And perhaps it would be possible to intimidate the peasants in ratting out the insurgents. Legates are scarce in these parts and  between her  and sergeant clouse who knows...

Rash'Gar stopped momentarily. Taking in deep breaths through his nose and mouth he concentrated on the smell of smoke and the scent of the blood.

After a few moments he motioned to the two goblins and the grak,York.

"Smoke that way", as he gestured in the direction of the smoke smell.

"Be silent"

Beware Brother, I also smell blood in the wind

With that he set out in the direction of the blood and smoke.

« Reply #1229 on: February 14, 2018, 07:12:51 AM »

The two Goblins followed Rash'Gar's words without any hesitation, moving ahead stealthily.

York scanned the direction Rash'Gar had indicated, but instead he turned and began moving back towards the rest of their group.

Xein watched the Grak move back but let him go. "Blood? A wounded hunt or a fresh kill then. Let's scout ahead Rash'Gar." Then the two brothers began moving ahead through the grass stealthily.

Meanwhile...

Clouse and Aliya moved in the middle of their group. The days had been filled with a lot of overland traveling but not much else. Thus far there had been little in the way of other travelers or traffic of any sort. The hours had been filled by Clouse talking about anything Aliya could ask the Hobgoblin who could recite the events of entire days or any events he felt like remembering. Lackey suddenly looked over and began excitedly pointing out someone was coming. Red wandered over and met York coming back from up ahead.

"Report." Clouse said.

"The wolf, said he smelled smoke. I did not see anything but I trust his senses."

Clouse frowned but looked to Aliya. "Hmm, it could be skilled hunters attempting to hide their camp fire. They'll likely scatter when they hear us coming but we shouldn't ignore them either."

Up Ahead...

Rash'Gar moved through the grass, the sensation of the smoke grew steadily stronger and so did the scent of blood. He could sense where Xein was even though he could not see or hear him. He was not immediately sure where Flit or Wisp were.

Then he began to smell the scent of rotting meat in the air and he began to pick up on the tracks left in the ground. Orcs had been through here recently. Then they had started fighting. At first Rash'Gar thought it might have been themselves as Orcs he was told were occasionally prone to do, but no, he started picking up on Halfling tracks too.

Finally, up ahead he spotted a clearing with something strange in it. There was an area several large pieces of wood had been erected into a large X-shape. Tied to it was what appeared to be an Orc. The Orc was either dead or unconscious although it was difficult to tell. Not far from him was where a burn pile had been made. It looked as though bodies had been dragged from many directions and piled together and then burned.

Sitting next to the smoldering fire were 4 halflings. They were all armed with short-bows and hunting knives but they looked wounded. The face of the two Rash'Gar could see were dejected and their expressions haunted as they stared into the fire. They didn't appear to have noticed anything.

Rash'Gar moved as slowly and as quietly as possible into the clearing.

When the halflings became  aware of him he stops.

Rash'Gar could normally tell when Halflings were close by. Lord Skinner had tested his bonding ability with him and other Halfling servants. It had always worked but only with Xein had the bond gone beyond several dozen feet at any time. He was sure he'd be able to hear their thoughts after showing himself to them but there was nothing...

All of the wounded Halfings grabbed onto their weapons and looked up at him.  Their haunted and dejected faces seeming to jerk or twist out of their reverie into something resembling snarling smiles.

"Run and we'll die, huh? You're funny."

"Look! He is a Wogren."

"Not fully, he is something else too. But he speaks our language."

"We won't run, we're already dead... and soon... you will be too." The first said loudly pointing

Brother... behind you! Rash'Gar then heard the unmistakable twang of 3 arrows being loosed.

Rash'Gar ducked and moved to his right.

He kept moving around the edge of the clearing keeping his distance from the halflings as he drew his longsword.

Trying to position himself opposite his companions.

"Oh look, many meals coming to us!"
"I can't wait to dig in!"
"One of us, I wonder how he'll taste?"
"Everyone up, now! You three, chase after the large one. Can't let him get away!"

As Rash'Gar readied himself, he heard sudden rustling of bushes and three feral looking Halflings bearing fangs at him came rushing him from all sides. Two had what appeared to be large gash marks across their arms and chests, while another seemed to have been shot with several large arrows as evidenced by the broken shafts. The vardatch wounds had been fatal by sheer ferocity and savage nature of the Orcs. But the bow shots were of expert marksmanship targeting vital organs. All of this went through the Gnollgren's mind in an instant as his sharp instinct let him pick up that another enemy had moved up close behind him. This one was not rushing in like the others however, it had the patience of an ambush predator.

Still some distance back, Aliya was noticing various tracks that had come through here some days ago. They were not easy to spot, hunters or perhaps slavers had come through the area. They were large tracks, Orcs she was fairly certain though they did not have the typical hobnailed boots, but before she could ascertain more, she began to hear distant sounds of shouting in a language she did not recognize. It was coming from the direction Rash'gar, Xein, and the goblins had gone.

Aliya followed the track. She  cant aid Rash´Gar fom to far away. Better to stay out of  immediate danger and summon backup. It would come to her then. Izradors will be done.

Rash'Gar turned slightly to his right as he felt the heat rising in his body. Swirling around him were the spirit wisps, also attacking his foes.

Letting loose a ferocious growl he used fang and claw to remove the Halfling creature from his side.

Rash'Gar's claws cut their way through the long grass as the nimble fell halflings ducked, dodged, and somehow held onto the much larger Gnollgren despite his ferocious onslaught. The strange broken spirits latching on to Rash'Gar's anger cannot seem to find their focus either and all goes wild spreading harmlessly.

Xein rushed forward intent to break the Halfling which held tight still biting into his brother's neck, but it was a glancing blow to it's left leg as the Elfling lacked any real power behind his strike.
Flit and Wisp followed suit, both circling around opposite of Xein where they began their own attacks. Flit's attack landed a solid blow to the Fells same leg with a sickening crack which loosened the Fell's grip but not enough to completely deter it. Wisp leaped up onto Flit's back and jumped into the air coming down with a solid strike but missed entirely.

The Fell Rash'Gar had thrown back initially rushed up to Xein, but the Efling dodged away from it's grasping claws. Rash'Gar finally managed to elbow the Fell that had been biting into his side, knocking it away from him. But the one on his neck held on and bit ever deeper, but it was unable to wrestle the raging Gnollgren to the ground.

Finally breaking into the clearing, Aliya, Clouse and his company came upon the fight with the scouts. They had just enough time to parse what was happening when there was a sudden twang from off in the bushes and an arrow flew towards Aliya.

Rash'Gar was seeing red.

His one and only thought was to rid himself of this unnatural Dunni. Using Teeth and claws he attempted to rip the creature from him.

As Aliya began calling forth her shadow creations, Sergeant Clouse and his squad moved into position as he barked orders.

"Red, move into position and get Legate Aliya cover!" The red-skinned goblin was already moving to reply before he had finished receiving orders, slamming his tower shield into the ground.

"York, take up a support position and give the scouts some cover fire."

Clouse held his arm out pointing toward the spot in the grass where the arrow shot targeting Aliya had come from. "Lackey, take King hunting!" The lumbering Ogre and the small goblin riding it charged forward with a yell.

---------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------

Rash'Gar could only see red, the pain in the back of his neck causing him to thrash angrily back toward the Fell snatching it and then with the sounds of snapping bones, he proceeded to tear the Fell limb from limb. He took vague notice as the ogre came trampling through, smashing down into the grass.

Xein struck another glancing blow at the leg of his own attacker but it did not relent.

It was then that Flit and Wisp turned their attention to the the remaining Fell who had failed to hold onto Rash'Gar, moving to surround it on both sides before striking it in each arm. Wisp seemed to have cut along a primary ligament, causing it's left arm to fall limply at its side.

Aliya concentrated as hard on the prayer as she could. Which was not easy to do when jumping out of the way. For perhaps the first time she was thankfull forr the cruel and even possibly harmfull pranks which certain novices played to try and sabotage her. She recited the chant in her head while picturing the most frightening and fierce looking hellhound she could.

Aliya had been warned by her mentor, a once truly successful practitioner of summoning and binding, that summoning forth the fiendish spirits was often times a dangerous prospect. They were always stronger and more powerful than the summoning of normal types, but they were vicious and often very difficult to control even for the caster themselves. The one way around this, was the calling of Lawful spirits. By adhering to some ancient pact with Izrador, these spirits tended to seek good relationships with their summoners in return for preferable treatment when being summoned.

"If you remember anything, Aliya, remember this. Those foolish enough to anger the spirits they call forth or too weak to control them, are better off never summoning again. These spirits do not forget and are vindictive if crossed. They will actively seek to subvert you in that case. It's why I can no longer summon things."

With a sudden gathering of smoke and a strong smell of brimstone, large blood red eyes glanced out toward Aliya. There was a brief moment where the young Legate sensed a solid push at her will power from the spirit but she held onto her concentration and there was no further attempt. The smoke began to glow a fiery red-orange and coalesced into a large, powerful wolf like form, it's body surrounded by a partial exoskeleton of bones that protruded from its sides and flames began to wash around it. Then with an understanding nod, the 6 ft. tall wolf-like creature brimmed in fire rushed out toward where the Halfling fell stood between the two goblins and chomped into its side. Flit and Wisp quailed in sudden terror from the unexpected beast as the fire flared around it as it lifted the halfling off the ground and proceeded to burn it where it stood until stopped moving. The grass burned where it moved, leaving nothing but blackened steps in its wake, and it threw the charred corpse at its feet.

From within the bushes, King Blanket lets out a roar of anger and pain as he lifts up his swinging arm with a one legged Halfling grabbing on and tearing into his fore arm. Lacky, half screaming, half shouting on top of Blanket's shoulders, holding onto the harnesses for dear life with one hand and waving around a dagger wildly in the other, but the Ogre forcibly throws the fell back to the ground. Xein meanwhile continues to dodge away from the lunging Halfling who keeps trying to tear into his flesh!

Aliya know she must be precise with her words. Fiends may try and take her words and use them against her: So dhe spoke : "Creature kill the halflings and only them. Or die trying. . " With her hand she indecated the Insurgens in  question. "Attak no one else. If they atake me or my companions then the most dangerous foe is the first to die. If the last halfling is dead you return to the astral plane."

Aliya finished that of with some protection prayers as she was taught.

With a mighty overhead strike, King Blanket crushed the one-legged halfling into the dirt. The Ogre was enraged and bleeding heavily from the wrist where he had been mauled by vicious foe but he was also starting to recover now.

Flit and Wisp retreated away from the hell-hound which reacted swiftly to both of the goblins but it did not lash out at either. They scrambled to retreat back to the Fell that Xein was fighting. The Elfling landed another glancing blow on the undead creature. But that's when the two goblins took advantage of it's distraction. Wisp cutting into the Fell's leg tendon with enough force to drop it to one knee, while Flit thrust his dagger into the nape of the Fell where it stopped moving with one final jerking motion.

Now shielded with her defensive magics, Aliya allowed herself to think clearly with the all of the knowledge she had gained from her studies.

There was a brief moment where Rash'Gar was sure all enemies had been defeated and victory had been achieved. But then he caught sight of the hell-hound moving, he could tell immediately that it was heading directly toward Xein.  But he could also tell that his brother had not let down his guard yet and saw the hound coming after him, he crouched ready to evade, and that's where Xein made a fatal mistake... he sprang forward into a tucking side roll but the wolf-like creature predicted his movement and preemptively altered its course lunging before him.

The creatures flaming maw caught the Elfling in the upper chest and shoulder region. Its teeth and fire burned it's way immediately through his armor as Xein cried out in shock and pain while the hell-hound jerked him around with a loud snapping sound. With one final satisfied jerk, the hound threw the limp body of the Elfling to the ground and looked back to Aliya with gleaming red eyes expectantly.

That was when Aliya realized her mistake. She had been right to be wary of fiends, even "lawful" ones. This one had taken her words extremely literally. It had only gone after only Halflings, as she had ordered. She could not be sure if this thing knew the difference or not, as Xein had been an Elfling, which if the fiend did know the difference, in many respects still counted according to the letter of the law, if not the spirit. The difference was much more obvious to her now but several times  she had seen and even heard others refer to the Elfling as her pet Halfling slave. This one had only done as it was told... or had it?

Rash'Gar's perception of time slowed as he felt an intense amount of surprise and then pain shoot through the bond with his brother. There was no words, senses, or thoughts as his vision turned red, hyper focusing on that one fiery beast. Unleashing a furious howl, Rash'Gar charged forward at the Hell hound as it stood over the body of Xein. He delivered a savage blow to the beasts back. It crumpled but did not completely fall as it was much stronger and tougher than it seemed.

Aliya had been a patient and understanding person for a long time. Her uncle had taught her to have patience when she was a child. Her mentor had preached understanding as she had learned the ways of being a Legate. She had practiced these teachings in front of others who had had tried to force her into making hasty decisions. But not today, today she no longer had any patience or understanding left. Not for this creature. Following a tirade of anger, Aliya came rushing in from the other side the same time Rash'Gar lunged forward and crashed into it. As it crumpled under the Gnollgren's power, she struck with her obsidian dagger, plunging it into the beasts neck.

The goblin Red seemed surprised as Aliya moved past him and came chasing after her.

The Hell hound began to vanish into smoke in the air but something happened at that moment. Aliya's horned skull necklace of Izrador began to resonate with a light humming and due to her heightened connection with Izrador, she could feel a powerful displeasure. A moment later her obsidian dagger hummed as well. Instead of dissipating completely, the spirit was drawn into the dagger.

Something bloomed in her mind in that moment. It was akin to the connection she felt to Izrador in the moments of prayer and contemplation, but where Izrador felt all encompassing and more of a sensation she experienced, this was more aware. A solid, tangible, presence. It was small, afraid, and she could tell, very breakable.

A slow cognition formed in her mind. W H A T . I S . T H I S?

Rash'Gar watched in raging fury as the beast dissipated but some part of his mind calmed enough to recognize two things. First, there were no longer any enemies still moving that he could sense. Second, while his bond with Xein was silent, it was still intact!
No! So close! I was so close to being free!!

"York, search the area. Make sure we're not going to get jumped on with another surprise! " Clouse yelled. "Lacky... Lacky! Make sure to keep an eye out with Blanket." He then came over to Aliya. "Legate Aliya. Are you alright?"

Aliya felt a foreign pressure in her mind. It was not a agressive or threateningf one, more likely  an inquisive one. She recognized this as her and the spirit having been bound. Not a common phenomen but not extraordinary either. This was a serviceable option, and good fortune coming out of a bad situation

" Izrador bound us Spirit. you tried to disobey and this is  the consequengce, Praise be the Dark Lord in the north. Stay close and alet me on anything unnatural and extraplanar. If there is nothing. act as guard and sentry for our group Your name shall henceforth be Orion. "  As she returned her consciousnes Clouses words came to her.

! Yes  i am all right now."

Rash'Gar picked Xein up off the ground. The Elfling's breathing was ragged. Thankfully the fire seemed to have seared the wounds closed and there was only a little bit of blood. Still the shock of the wounds had sent Xein into unconsciousness. Rash'gar had learned enough of the healing arts from watching his brother treat wounds that he was capable of doing so but he had not really kept up with it.

Clouse nodded. "Good." The rest of his immediate squad formed up.

As Aliya gave her commands to the spirit, she felt as though her words now held a weight to them. A magical compulsion which reminded her of the night that Lazhin had spoken to the woman who was to be the official sacrifice in her stead.

Y E S. L E G A T E.

A moment later, Aliya felt a hot burning sensation on the side of her neck.

Then York returned a few moments later. "Sergeant, I found something you should come see. An orc, lashed up to several posts near a ruined Halfling camp. He's unconscious and barely alive."

"Hmm, he could have some valuable information. Legate Aliya, will you accompany us to see if this Orc is worth keeping alive?"
