Aliya answered: " We met some orcs on the Way here. Thei brought us to their leader. We were at this point accompanied by a Soldier Legate. Sir Riddar. He had the command over the trackers. They were on a mission from a Legate called Lord Skinner, from Swift Water i think. Something about a Witch was it. The exact Backround is not known to me. Anyway at this Camp we met Legate Mandrel and Ginei another Soldier Legate. This Man you mentioned, Jenei was also there together with the Enourages of the other two. Mandrel was from outside the area i think, Ginei acted like the camp was his. How Jenei fitted in there was not clear. Legate Mandrel was not waat he seemed though. He was a Seeker Legate and had disagreements with the other two prior to our arrival. We reported the increased rebel activity and the possible Danger of a witch in the Area. Legate Mandrel was revealed to be a Seeker Legate. He was quarelling with Ginei and left after having mistaken me for one of his sect. One of his men, an Erenlander whose name i dont remember attaced Soldier Legate Ginei and was killed. This entire thing seemed somehow off. And it was . Later, we had our papers and were resting a fire broke out. Jenei was killed. As was Sir Riddar. He did not wake due to a "blessing" that lessened his need to sleep but was rendering him catatonic at the same time. After alerting some goblins and getting them to watch over him i was about to leave. Hearing about Jeneis death i wanted to inspect the corpse, at this time suspecting some sort of foul play. A sabouteur in the Camp. Some fights followed that were won mainly by Rash´Gar, Sergeant Clouse and his goblins. We escaped relatiely unscatched. I sensed a strong mind altering spell, at this time nubing were i felt it before inducing rage and bloodlust. Sensing it but being unable to completely break it Rash´Gar found the caster. He and Xein were able to defeat him. After this Ordeal  i suggested we come here. You need to know what transpired since it looked like a mole in the Order.

Rash'Gar looks directly into the mans eyes.

"I am a tracker for Sir Riddar. My brother and these two goblins are my packmates. I do not remember the names of the men in the tent but several wanted to lead the pack"

"The camp became fire and blood. Many were confused and had no desire to fight. Others seemed unaffected. We were attacked and We fled the fight. Sir Riddar was sleeping as if dead. I do not know if he or the rest of our squad survived."

"Aliya was travelling with the squad. She led us here"

"Good." he said nodding to those ahead of him. "Your stories corroborate with each other and I sense no deception. What about you? You've been awfully quiet." he said looking at the Elfling. "Despite your training, you're no regular Halfling slave or servant according to both Aliya and Rash'Gar. Your darkened armor alone speaks to that."

Xein had been keeping his head lowered in deference to the High Legate, but when the others spoke he looked at Rash'Gar and Aliya then up to him.

"It is as they say, High Legate. Lord Skinner, he is my pack brother Rash'Gar and I's master. We are both trackers in service to him. We were sent along with Sir Riddar and a small company of other Legates from his manor house to chase after a powerful Elf witch and a number of outlaws she had escaped with. Along the way we found ourselves at another work camp within the mountains controlled by a Legate, one of the Seeker sect I believe, by the name of Jael. He was preparing for an assault against a Dwarven stronghold called Durgis Rock. We helped with the assault hoping to catch our query but they escaped within the confusion. The Dwarven stronghold was taken. Afterwards, Sir Riddar was tasked by Jael to mark and track their progress, rather than to capture them. Jael was of higher rank and he was also in the direct service of another Legate calling himself The Master In Grey. "

At the mention of that name, Aliya's Uncle's eyes widened with immediate recognition.

"I had not realized that one so powerful was operating within the area. Also a Halfling tracker who is also well trained in proper behavior. Continue." It was obvious that the gears were turning within the Head Legates mind as he listed very closely.

"Not long after as we started to track the outlaws, we came across Acolyte Aliya traveling within the mountains. She explained why she was traveling and agreed to help us hunt down the outlaws. We lost them when they disappeared up a cliff face and into some sort of Dwarven tunnel door within the mountains. We'd also fought with a scouting group of resistance fighters and tracked the location of a band of Dornish refugees. On the group of resistance fighters we'd found a poorly drawn map that indicated where a possible camp might be located but Sir Riddar chose to ignore it. Everything after that are things that have been explained."

"Good. I can work with this." The Head Legate nodded to himself, smiling. But after a few moments, his smile then disappeared as he stood up straight with his hands behind his back and stared hard at Aliya. His voice becoming loud and authoritative. "Now, as per the duties befitted of my station as Head Legate of Badstone, I must take into consideration the actions that have since befallen this mission. I hereby declare this task a failure! With the untimely demise of Soldier Legate Sir Riddar, this mission fell to you, Acolyte Aliya of the Umbral Catholicon.

Acolyte Aliya of the Umbral Catholicon, you are hereby sentenced with the failure to carry out your superiors orders of such a high priority task. The price of such a failure, is death! You will be summarily executed  during the Midnight Ritual of Sacrifice ceremony to Izrador."

"The rest of you will be in attendance during this occasion."

He paused a moment.

"However! While this task would fall to me to perform as Master of Ceremonies, the Head Legate may, appoint this task to another in times of critical importance should the Master of Ceremonies be otherwise indisposed. As the Master of Ceremonies will not be present as of this time, I hereby appoint this task to Legate Aliya of the Keepers of Obsidian."

He continued to stare at his niece. "Tonight Aliya, you will be ordained to the full priesthood of Shadow. You will become a fully fledged Legate and then you will receive your Higher Calling. You will then choose which order you wish to join. The only one's allowed to perform a Ritual of Sacrifice are the Keepers of Obsidian. I hope you make the right choice."

Aliya was silent during this entire time. Her Uncle still loved to put on a show. It was one of his eccentricies that helped him to get his position. Especially if staff loyal to other Legates than himself was in Attendance. There was really only one route for her. To play along.

" I accept your sentance and take the Higher Calling and the Rite of Sacrifice.

From outside the door, Rash'Gar could sense someone moving slowly down the hallway, then stop not far from it.

Aliya's uncle was clearly pleased by her answer.

"Good. Now go and rest. I'll send you some scrolls in a little while so that you may remind yourself of how the rituals will be conducted. I trust Kilara has not let you slack on your reading skills? I'm afraid I won't have time to run through the ritual with you as I am preparing to leave immediately. I'll have Lazhin set things up for you."

The presence out in the hallway quickly but just as quietly disappeared.

He picked up a quill and dipped it in ink as he started to write some things down on a piece of parchment. Then stopped as something occurred to him. "Mmm, be sure that all of you bathe before tonight. Also Aliya, do something about your hair, it looks as though you've been living in the mountains, and that is going to change. Be sure to ask one of the slave girls if you need help. Remember, a Legate must always be presentable and it's better if your entourage does so as well. Should you desire help in finding someone, Lazhin or Shadaah can help direct you, but I don't think you'll need them." With a dismissive hand gesture he waved them out.

Aliya made her way to the room set aside for her . Her uncle was right, she really looked like some barbarin living in the wilds. She would take a b ath, putt on some fresh robes then hopefully having a bit time to meditate and pray. After that she would read the scrolls her  uncle mentioned. When all was done she would sleep for a bit.

« Reply #1181 on: August 13, 2017, 03:41:13 AM »

After Aliya had been shown to her chambers for the evening, Rash'gar and Xein had found themselves escorted to a farther back room that was a half empty cellar set aside for newer acolytes.

To Rash'Gar's sensitive nose, the room smelled of burnt wood, salted meats, a faint aroma of strong liquor, something pungent and acidic, and something that had a faint rotting smell. The young man leading them was also giving off a nervous vibe to Rash'Gar, though he tried his hardest to remain calm.  There were layered bunk cots and stacks of supply crates that seemed to have been set up as an impromptu tables and chairs. In one corner were a number of clay urns and large sacks that had been piled high.

On each of the tables were a number of fresh or half melted candles.

Near the back of a cleared off section were a small collection of iron pots arrayed in some sort of line.

"You two may rest here. Help yourselves to the dried rations here Remember you are guests at the pleasure of the head Legate's niece. Do nothing to upset this and you will find yourselves able to stay here comfortably. Do anything wrong and you will quickly find yourselves in a less hospitable environment."

"Your hospitality is noted." Xein said with a bow to the Legate leading them. "Praise be to Izrador!" he then prompted, switching tongues to show the Sarcosan Legate proper respect.

It was a disarming gesture on the Elfling's part. But it seemed to do the trick as the Legate seemed at first surprised and then a little taken aback.

"Yes, well, good. You know then. Praise be to Izrador. I'll return later for when the ceremony is about to begin." The younger legate spun on his heels and turned to go quicker than he'd led them in.

The door was closed and then Xein let out a small sigh of relief.
"Well brother, this is a little bit more like home now isn't it? Except, they see me as little more than a favored servant, but they seem to be nervous around you."

Aliya's sleep lasted for several comfortable hours. Even with a cot and blanket, sleeping outside on the hard ground and rocky terrain of the Kaladruns was never easy. The bed she lay in was far better than that. When she awoke later she found that a small table had been set up with a pair of candles, hand mirror, wash basin, cloth towel, and soap. Next to them were a pitcher half filled with a liquid that smelled of plum wine, a delicacy from the south that she recalled her uncle favoring. Folded underneath the table were new robes and slippers. There was a soft knock at the door and a muffled but pleasant sounding voice of a young woman came through the door.

"My lady, if it pleases you I will draw you a bath before the ceremony this evening. We've hot water ready too. I will also wash your back should you desire it."

The Sarcosan girl who walked into Aliya's room was a few inches shorter than Aliya was herself. She had shoulder length dark mousy brown hair and deep chocolate colored eyes. She wore a simple shift of pale white and a pair of slippers. She carried a lacquered wooden bath tub fixed with three iron bands around the outside across the room to an open area with only a little real effort.

Setting down the tub, she bowed. "I'll fetch the water now, my lady." With that she turned to quickly pass through the room and back out into the hallway. She returned less than 30 seconds later holding a large cask which sloshed with water and let out a fair amount of steam. She poured it quickly into the tub which filled about a quarter of the way full. She repeated this process twice more making sure the bath was well drawn without overflowing. Seeming satisfied with the temperature she turned face Aliya.

"I will attend you this evening. My given name is Ellen. Should you need anything, simply say so, my lady." her eyes were downcast as she spoke. Showing the proper social deference in their stations.

As Aliya disrobed, the servant girl took her clothes and set them aside. The water was just on the under side of being too hot as it must have been boiling not long before. It was inviting and immediately began to soothe Aliya's skin after so many days on the hard road.

After several minutes of just soaking herself in the relaxing heat, Aliya could feel the pains of her body slowly beginning to leach away. It was at this point that the servant girl picked up a cloth towel and dipped it into the water before beginning to slowly press into her back, slowly working at the knots that had been developing. "I am to understand that my lady has been traveling the mountains recently. That along with any arduous tasks you might have had to do can take a toll on one's body. It's important to make sure you relax when you can and to drink enough water. Twenty minutes in warm water like this can have long lasting benefits for ones self." While Ellen spoke she continued to wash and lightly massage Aliya's back. It was pleasantly easy to tell that the girl had clearly been practiced in these sorts of skills.

"Once we are done here, I could also see to it that you get a proper massage?" she proffered questioningly. "Or would you prefer to prepare yourself for the ritual later instead?"

Rash'Gar rummaged through their temporary quarters.

Stopping to look at things, smelling them. Casting them aside.

Eventually eating from his own rations.

After eating he curled up in a corner to rest.

I sleep now brother

Aliya was enjoying her first bath in weeks. She had never been on the roaad so long in her life. Her connstitution was worse than she thought. "Thank you Ellen. That massage sounds good, but i would like a few minutes before the ritual to meditate. " Aliya said while brushing her hair and finishing at the hundred and fifth stroke. Her mind was firmly set on the upcoming ritual. If she was honest with herself she was a bit nervous. Not that she would admit it aloud to anyone. Aliya was so distracted she barely noticed the time flowing.

Rash'Gar's search of the room revealed the various contents of the store room. The burning wood smell was just that, a small area of charcoal that had been carefully set up as to not spread anywhere. Near it was the collection of pots and pans. One held a strong alcohol. Another had the smell of pungent vinegar. The faint rotting smell was that of rotting Boro's milk residue from a pan and a cloth towel inside. The clay urns held in them sealed Boro's milk that was still fresh. The large sacks were all sealed, save for one that had a small opening which revealed it to be crushed salt rocks.

In one pot set off to the side were several disks shaped objects wrapped in cloths stacked on top of each other. Picking one up revealed it to have a semi-malleable consistency but when given any amount of real pressure seemed to crumble in his hands. It held a dull smell that was covered by all of the other smells in the room but it also gave off a relatively odd texture. It was certainly edible.

Curious enough at what his brother was examining, Xein came over and tried some too. "Hmm, not a bad flavor... but I think I'd want to eat something else with it." the elfling commented.

The dried meats in the room were typical rations but with the salt readily available the taste was a little bit better. Xein gave off a pleased expression when he tried the crumbled goods along with the meats.

Sleep well then brother. I will take watch and awake you when it is time to go.

As Rash'Gar slept, he dreamed of running through the fields, hunting his prey. His keen senses focused first on the tall figures, humans, he knew. They moved well but were slowed, foolishly by the speed of those smaller one's with them. Dwarves he was sure, and smaller ones still. Halfling, Gnome, and a Dwarrow. But they were not the ones he wanted. A slightly taller lithe figure still escaped him. She moved as fast as the Humans could, perhaps a little faster. He knew she was out there somewhere ahead of them. Somewhere but not here. He ran past the other figures, some of them hooded from view even as they ran... and somehow they seemed suddenly smaller to him now, almost like he was looking down on them as he ran. His body ached as he realized this but still he ran. She was still far away but somehow he knew that as long as he kept running, he would eventually find her.

Some hours later, Rash'Gar felt the presence of Xein and then another individual. His senses returned to him fully and his eyes snapped open. Standing across the room was the Legate from earlier, Lazhin. He stood with a disarming smile on his face.

"Come honored guests. You are to witness the blessing of a new Legate into our order this evening. A rare moment for those not of the church's cloth. Follow me this way."

Aliya was brought out of her reverie by a soft knock at the door. Ellen waited on the outside. "It is time, my lady. Please follow me to the great hall." she said in an even voice, turning to lead Aliya. It was a formality of course, but one that was often respected. The two traveled to the edge of the side passage and then stopped near the end. "Please, wait here. My lady. You will be called into the room when it is time."

Two great braziers were lit at the front of the room. Torches had been lined all along the wall within the temple to provide extra lighting.  All of the benches save for one row in front had been filled with the human population of Badstone. Although a few Orcs stood in the back as well.

The Legate Acolytes had gathered at the front of the room. They all waited quietly murmuring, although there was some hushed gasps and more excited speaking as Xein and Rash'Gar entered the room and were seated near the front by Lazhin.

The Legate took a moment and seemed pleased at the gathering before him. He then turned to walk between the two braziers and stand facing the room.

"My dear believers, my pious flock. It is good to see so many of you have gathered here of your own volition. For tonight is indeed a special occasion. First, we shall ordain and welcome a new priestess into our ranks, as she completes her training from being an acolyte and ascend into the role of a true servant of Izrador! Once we have completed that, we will bear witness to this Season's harvest sacrifice."

The small room filled an echoing chorus of voices. "GLORY BE TO IZRADOR!"

Lazhin grinned openly. "Come forth, Acolyte Arvolor, let us help bring you to your destiny! Let us help you to reach your higher calling!"

Aliya who had been waiting in the hall finally stepped forward. She was met with over one hundred pairs of eyes staring at her in the crowded room. All of those gathered seemed quite impressed with the way she carried herself.

The words of her mentor Kilara echoed in her head as she moved to stand between the two braziers. A Legate must command the respect of the common people. You are to be above them, you must maintain an air of dignity, composure, and carry yourself with confidence at all times while in front of them. A Legate must strive to be clean, and an example for them to follow in their lives. You will not be rewarded for being yourself around them. You must leave who you are behind and embrace that which you will become. You are to be Izrador's servant above all else.

She kneeled down.

With a wave of his hand, four other Acolytes came forth bearing a large ornate container made of pure Obsidian. Aliya had heard of them before but had never seen one. She recognized it as an Ormelac, a container for capturing and housing the corrupt magics of Channelers. This Ormelac was filled with captured magics, she could tell by the way it almost seemed to hum with small vibrations and there was a charge in the air that unmistakably made the hairs stand up on the back of her neck as it was set in front of her.

Lazhin then leaned in toward Aliya and whispered. "When it is time, you will declare your intentions to Izrador, proclaim which calling you wish for, then open the Ormelac." he then turned away from her with an air of assertiveness.
"Now, we will begin our prayers to Izrador."

The room grew silent, Lazhin began speaking, but soon the other Legates joined in, and then the rest of the group gathered into a choir.

"Grant us this night the strength
Grant us this night the fire
Grant us this night the keenness
To be Your servant.

Grant us this night our speed
Grant us this night our wits
Grant us this night our cunning
To be Your servant.

Grant us this night the shadow
Grant us this night the eye
Grant us this night the knowing"

the rising tide of voices reached a crescendo and stopped, they waited for the end. Lazhin's eyes looked toward Aliya

Aliya looked at the Ormelac. The Dark Gods might emitting from it, filling it with some kind of life. Aliya gathered her thougts and spoke: " Today i stand before our Lord and his Faithfull to pledge my oath as a Legate in the Covenant of the Keepers of Obsidian.  " Great Izrador to your Service i bin me. Life, soul and blood. My Service shall be a sign to you. Every Day in my life will strife to strenghten you and tgo be a instrument of your divine will. Anyone who defies you shall be my foe. Never will i aid those not of our faith. Praise be to you Lord of all that is"  Aliya finished usiing the older Form of the Legate oath as it was the one her Uncle had taught her and used in his youth. She opened the Ormelac...

Almost all involved stared at Aliya with some amount of surprise as she continued her own personal prayer, even Lazhin blinked several times, clearly expecting her to have followed the shorter version he had been setting up. But a few older members of the crowd nodded with fervor and smiled as if to encourage her further. They almost had time to turn and begin quietly conversing with one another. But as the Ormelac was opened the room pulsed with a bright flash of light and a sudden explosive rush of untamed wild power burst forth!

The raw wild magic coursed through Aliya, as she absorbed a direct blast of it nearly knocking her off of her feat leaving her dazed, others nearby were also hit with the preceding wave which filled the room and traveled even outside. More than half of the gathered congregation were thrown from their seats with the mix of surprise and shock filled the room. Lazhin and several of his acolytes were likewise dazed or knocked to the ground.

Rash'Gar covered himself in time to bear the brunt of the shock wave but even then felt his old wounds begin to sear with white hot pain. His keen senses were overloaded with the sounds of people shouting in surprise and several pews being knocked over. Not only that but he could feel a large rush of magic being pulled more towards him and then there was a pulse from his back, as the hammer he'd been carrying around with him flared to life its dark fires causing yet another rush of heat.

Next to him Xein likewise managed to keep his feet. Rash'Gar could feel another rush of energy coursing over his brother, at first he seemed completely unaffected by the pulse as the magic seemed to slide over him but then there was a rush of cold which came from a pouch on his belt. Then Rash'Gar saw Xein begin to double over as he sensed pain course through his entire body. Before he could ask what was happening, Rash'Gar heard a familiar voice echoed strongly through his mind.

Aaaah, yes! Finally! an amount worth consuming. then the Gnollgren understood. Skindancer was pulling the magic through his brothers body and feeding himself.

Then the rush of power seemed to suddenly slow itself. What had been flowing strongly outwards was now being steadily pulled towards the back of the room and down. But it was not enough to entirely quell the rush of energy which still flowed out of the room.

Near the back of the room there was a commotion as one of the Legate Acolytes seemed to go tumbling out from a side foyer in a heap. Then a voice said, "She was drugged, how?!"

A woman wearing only a simple white garb came running running forward into the room. She looked surprisingly like Aliya although she was a few inches taller and was an Erenlander despite the fact she seemed to favor her Sarcosan side. Her legs and arms seemed surprisingly muscular for her size. She had ropes tied around her wrists but seemed to have somehow snapped them free of each other. She glanced around the room in a sluggish manner and looked toward the doorway leading out.

Lazhin still lay on the ground having seemingly not yet recovered. "No... don't let the sacrifice escape! But you mustn't kill her either!"

Aliya did not kow why thwe ritual whent off the rails. Her uncle snd her were not the first Legates in her family. Every third or so generation someone would join the Clergy. The belonged to the cabal of course. So she know the oath since she was aa very young novice, having read it in some diary of her distant and long forgotten kin.  Her Grand Uncle had since then drilled the proper rites and adherence to them into her. As he was taught to. in his opinion this prayer was a bit calmer and less martial than the more popular new version. The energies used were not gentler, but rater more controlled. Instead of using blind hatred of malice one would use his own determination and faith to fuel it. Regardless she struggeled to her feet.

This whole place was uncomfortable. The oppressiveness. He wanted to rid himself of taint he felt here. Soon he told himself, we will be leaving. Soon.

Then the rush of magic?  He watched intensely as it was released. Then relalized to late that he was a target. The energy rushed towards him, faster than even Xien. Rash'Gar wanted to howl in pain but stoically held himself in check. The blast almost knocked him down but he withstood the rush of power. The hammer strapped to his back pulsed with power.

As his ever lingering wounds intensified and then subsided his mind was reminded vividly of the human woman who caused him such suffering. Her face, her smell burned into his consciousness.

Someday woman...someday .

Brother? Are you wounded ?

He felt the need to get out of this place but did not want to draw any more attention to himself or his brother. He waited for a chance to slip away should the opportunity present itself.

Xein sank to his knees in pain I... I don't understand what is happening! It's cold all over my body. Skindancer, he's found a way to pull energy into me.

The Sarcosan woman seemed to gain vigor as she hurriedly shoved her way through several members of the crowd making her way to the double stone doors. With a surprisingly mighty shove for one of her size, she threw open the doors to the temple allowing the natural moonlight to spill in.

Rash'Gar's opportunity to slip away from the room seemed hand as no one was paying him any heed.

Aliya's blessing emanated from her with a sensation of righteous anger and determination, calming the room immensely. Her eyes came back into focus and she easily picked out the woman who was standing in the doorway. More than half of the congregation still seemed confused as to what was happening but others were now staring at her as well.

Near the back half of the room most of the Legate's seemed to have regained some of their senses. They were moving but most appeared to still be unable to see clearly.

One of the Acolytes however seemed to have also cleared his vision and moved forward, his holy symbol of Izrador presented before him.

"You shall not disrupt our ritual with your thoughts of escape. You will halt this instant!"

Aliya could tell that his words were weighted with both the magic of their God and with something in the girls demeanor that bespoke years of servitude. She looked as though she was about to run but her body forcibly rebelled against her. So instead she turned around and took a step back in the acolyte's direction. There was now a spark of fear but also determination in her eyes.

In a fluent tongue accented by the more sophisticated dialect of the southern city of Hallisport, she responded not in Coloniel but in Courtier. "Dress me up however you want, I will never be a sacrifice for your conceited lies, Lazhin."

"You insolent woman! How dare you speak out against our High Legate!"

Despite not being able to see, Lazhin finally climbed to his feet. Although clearly unsteady for being blind, he'd found the right direction where the conversation was taking place. "Do not listen to her words, my dear flock! Nor should you rise to her provocations, Brother Rothsin. This woman is but a witch and she will say anything to escape!"

The urge to slip away was strong but when his brother slumped down his instinct to protect him took over.

Rash'Gar took up a protective stance over his brother. Ready to defend him.

How can I help you brother?

J-just help me up. Xein told him, obviously still in pain.

The room was starting to fill with the murmuring of the gathered crowd around them, Rash'Gar was only able to catch bits and pieces of whispered conversation underneath the much louder Legates that were talking to the woman. Despite being preoccupied with helping his brother, he recognized that the woman was speaking a language that Lord Skinner had taught Xein. Although he did not know what was being said, he was able to tell that the woman was concentrating as she spoke and then something was happening to her physical stance. Her subtle movements seemed to become more fluid, her balance shifted and became more stable, and she seemed more poised.

As Rash'Gar reached down to help his brother, he felt an aura of cold emanating from Xein.

As Aliya spoke, the truth of the situation seemed to become more apparent to her. The spell that Legate Rothsin had used was a momentary command spell, weak in power but it had halted the woman's immediate escape, it's effects however had already worn off. Something about the way he'd referred to Lazhin as their head Legate seemed a little too convinced to her.

The crowd was starting to regain their senses even more now, her words cuing them in on what was transpiring, they seemed a mix of angry and afraid when staring at the woman. But none of them were apparent warriors, all seemed to be waiting to see how this played out while most believed that it would be as it should.

The woman herself was definitely an Erenlander, although she had more Sarcosan blood than coming out a drugged haze. She referred to Lazhin as though she'd known him personally. She sounded betrayed as if she hadn't been expecting it. What's more than that, she was a Channeler of sorts. Primitive, unschooled, a Channeler of the body, an Orphic. Her nature seemed more bluntly assertive, as opposed to clear headed or overly aware of herself. It was now obvious that she had been using her magic to physically enhance herself.

Lazhin obviously still blind, stood poised and overconfident, a smirk on his face.  Muttered an incantation that was much stronger but also more insidious. "Come, do not make this harder on yourself... Aliya. Surrender and it will be over swiftly."

The woman seemed to sway under the power of his words, but something clicked, she resisted his hypnotic suggestion and turned to look at Aliya once, her head snapped to the side as she seemed to realize something was happening outside, then finally took notice of how many people were in the room staring at her. Gritting her teeth, she turned and bolted out the front door and into the night.

"No! She's getting away! Guards! GUARDS!!" Brother Rothsin began shouting and started chasing her immediately. Lazhin's smirk faltered, and the crowd began to stand in a rising tide of confused and worried voices.

"Catch that woman do not let her escape!"

Damn. That thrice forsaken channeler resisted her spell. She did not have the energy to cast indefinitely. Having never been a good fighter Aliya knew she could not stop her alone as she was a  particular brand of witch. One very suited for drawn out battles. If her Master wills it she would finds a way. But not without having an opening..

"Inch towards daylight"

Shouts grew distant outside the church's doors. The woman had decided to run rather than fight.

The congregations quietly speaking grew to a low rumble of confusion, worry and fear, which was beginning to verge on panic.

"Wait, wait, she's actually getting away?!"
"Someone has to stop her!"
"I still can't see what happened?"
"The witch escaped! She just ran out the door!"
"... no."
"The soldiers will be chasing her! She couldn't possibly escape... right?"
"If she does... then Izrador will surely punish us!"
"How did this happen? Will we be blamed?"
"How could we not be! We will all be punished!!" "Forgive us Lord!"

"SILENCE!" came Lazhin's suddenly booming voice from the front of the room as he held aloft his horned skull. After his deafening roar, an unnatural stillness filled the air and most of the congregation fell into magically induced area of silence.

There were a handful of gasps and shocked sounds from those who were on the edge but the majority were caught in a bubble with many of them never having experienced such powerful displays were simply left with even more confusion. Lazhin turned to his aides who had seemed to have recovered the most.

"Close the doors, now!" as he barked his order several of the acolytes rushed to the front doors and pulled them closed. Not long after they had closed there was a sudden rush of sound returning to the area as the area of silence dissipated. By then Lazhin had managed to compose himself into an aura of calming authority and the group of voices finally seemed to have calmed themselves down.

"My dear flock listen to my words, tonight you have witnessed a great many troubling and no doubt confusing sights. You all have your worries I am sure... but this is a test of your faith in Izrador. We must not give in to panic, we must remain civilized. The witch who has escaped will be caught and she will be sacrificed for her blasphemy against all of us, and more importantly, against Izrador."

"But what of the ritual of sacrifice?" asked an older man from within the crowd.

Lazhin paused for the briefest of moments, a hint of annoyance showed on his face at being interrupted. "You are right... Arasam Hashi, was it?" the older man looked perplexed that he was remembered. "Your steadfast devotion is noted. We cannot simply let this go. Our God demands a sacrifice be made... and since we do not have our originally intended, the one responsible for keeping her must go in her place."

Aliya saw that his mouth twitched with just the barest hint of amusement but he kept a straight face overall.

"Legate Aliya, please come forward. We must continue the ritual." He gestured for her to come forward and as he did he also motioned for one of the acolytes to retrieve a wooden case which had been set off to a side table. It was hurriedly brought to him and it was opened to reveal a ceremonial looking dagger with a handle made of silver and black sharpened blade made of obsidian with a hooked curve at the end. It rested on a bed of purple silk along with its sheath which was also made of polished obsidian encased with golden filigree in the shape of the horned skull of Izrador.

He then turned to face the back of the room. "Acolyte Hashi, your direct failure to keep your charge in check has cost this congregation its intended sacrifice. For that... you must pay with your life. Come forward and go with Izrador's grace in dignity." His head snapped to the others standing near the startled youth and in a sharper commanding tone he said. "Restrain him, if he resists." The crowd began to murmur in some surprise at the speed of things, the older man from the crowd, Arasam's eyes widened in realization.

Acolyte Hashi had only a moment to understand what was happening, he began shaking his head before he was grabbed roughly on either side by his fellow acolytes and he was dragged forward.

Lazhin turned back to look at Aliya and whispered, "You know what to do." then he walked past her to stand along the side of the room.

Aliya stepped forward. Dagger in hand and ready to do her duty. That is what this sacrifice was. The acolyte taking the Channelers place was not a deviant or insurgent. It would be a quick death that is for sure.  " Great Lord Izrador take this sacrifice." She slit his throat with a sure and precise motion,  he did not have the time to feel pain.
