Kaliklies Library - The End

22th of Sennach, 99 Last Age

Itís been over an arc since I read Kaliklies last packet. That time was not wasted. True to Kalikliesís teachings, I trusted only what I could verify with my own eyes or from multiple reliable reports. Iíve spent thirty days tracking down ever reference Kaliklies used and read the full accounts, not just the excerpts my mentor provided. I could find no flaw in omission of facts or choice of sources. His research was sound; every place, every phenomenon existed. His facts were correct but I couldnít say the same for his conclusions.

I had twelve disparate pieces of a puzzle.  There could be dozens more or they could be completely unrelated. It reminded me of the bewildering game the Danisil hunters play, Tashta, where there are hidden pieces and even hidden players that could enter the game at any time. The demon hunters claim the game keeps their skills sharp, ever looking for the unseen dangers of the Aruun.

Kalikliesís packets were much the same as Tashta, there were hidden players like the wielders of the flint weapons and possibly the darguul, powerful lost lore, and even echoes of power from the lost gods. All of this was at the edges of the great war with the Shadow. How is it that they have stayed hidden all this time? Are they waiting for some event to come into play or donít they care what happens in this war? Like the Danisil game, are they waiting for one side to weaken so they can sweep its pieces from the board?

My path is set. The information Kaliklies uncovered is too dangerous and too important to ignore. Even if I wanted to walk away, I donít think I could.  Kaliklies rooms are now mine; a surprising gift from the master of our order. My original duties have been withdrawn and I have been told that I can take up a task of my own making. Somewhere in the Queenís Council I have a hidden patron. At the same time I have noticed records disappearing after I read them. Someone is ensuring that no one else follows my path. I feel that Iím being watched constantly. Itís strange to feel so threatened in the Queenís city.

5th of Zimra, 99 Last Age

I have to leave, Iím no longer safe. My rooms were broken into while I was with the orderís archivist. As far as I could tell nothing was taken, but I found blood in two separate rooms. Someone tried to hide it, but they didnít have enough time before I returned. At least one person died here, the stains are too large. Were they friends or enemies?  Iíll never know, but I need to get out of this city and get to a place where I can easier tell friend from foe.

I have taken the packets and my own notes and destroyed everything else. Iíll travel south into the Aruun. There are people there who can answer some of my questions and thereís at least one member of the order there who I trust. I hope I will be beyond the reach of the court. I can do no more here; except possibly die. I wonít find my answers in musty books, I have to find it myself.

Thatís it for Kaliklies Library. I hope you enjoyed my little excursion into myths and legends. I wanted to find a way to bind them all together and thought the Order of Truth to be far too underutilized. I may have to go back and write something more on them. These pieces were challenging to write, especially twelve of them. Next up will be something shorter and simpler. As always, any comments or complaints are appreciated. If anyone gets in game use out of any of the places in the library, let me know how it went.

Kane,

You write excellent stuff. This is excellent, I love it. I read these things and I try to picture how i'll throw these tidbits of information at the players and how to incorporate it into a game (i'm not running one now, but it'll come).

I'll probably take a moment to copy it all down to my Midnight folder at some point, so it wont be lost.

Thank you for this,

Arnon,

Glad you liked it.  I wanted to do something different that allowed the GM to fill in the details to fit their own campaigns.  At some point, I'll put it all together in a pdf and submit it to the site. Good to have you back.

Can we put all of the pieces into one large document?

Iornborn,

It's on my list to do, but I messed up my shoulder and sitting and typing is still fairly painful.  Give me a week or so and I'll send it to Nif to post.

Pheros,

Thank you.  I'm still going to drop them into a pdf at some point with the proper Midnight borders.

Your new serial Dark Water sparked my memory of this one, since Delian headed for the Aruun in the 99th year of the last Age to meet someone he could trust, it got my mind linking these together.  Definitely loving the serials keep them coming and best wishes for your mother.

Hiding from Shadow

I loved this one a lot. It sparked my imagination for a different approach to Midnight.

Since I read it, I discovered the GUMSHOE system and especially the "investigation sandbox campaigns" published by Pelgrane Press (the best example being the "Armitage Files" for Trail of Cthulhu) and thought it would be awesome to use Kaliklies Library using this model.

In such a campaign, a PC would play as the "inheritor" of Kaliklies' Library, and would be a member of the Order of Truth. The other PCs would play as his trusted servants (bodyguard, scout, etc). The whole campaign would revolve around solving the mysteries and uncover a sinister plot at play at Aradil's Court (explaining why the PCs are forced to move into dangerous territories and not stay in the safety of Erethor). Of course all PCs would be useful in their own right in solving this mystery...

Evil Hat are working on a GUMSHOE hack in which you play Quaesitors for the Order of Hermes in Ars Magica. Maybe it could be adapted for MIDNIGHT when it comes out (maybe not). Currently I'm daydreaming about hacking Night's Black Agents into a (Mid)Night's Black Agents, using Kaliklies' Library as a starting point for an open campaign:
- the PCs are on the move because a dark conspiracy in Caradul is on their trail;
- they are set on interpreting documents that could lead to uncover forgotten (and forbidden?) secrets, like the location of Aradar, the true story of Ardherin, the location of the heir of the kingdom of Erenland, etc;
- to uncover a secret you need to take risks; gaining knowledge brings other threats, which also allow to uncover further secrets;
- you are on the run and need to remain secretive, otherwise you gain Pressure;
- your Drives push you in your dangerous quest;
- stability-shattering discoveries await you (and you can become corrupted, too);
- (optional) can you trust the other PCs?
- use your wits to gain advantage in a fight, of only to allow you to escape from a superior opponent...

If you put aside the technothriller wrappings and lots of optional (and not so useful) stuff, you get a simple system that can bring the appropriate atmosphere for a party of "united" PCs, looking for answers while hiding from a dangerous conspiracy. Seems a good fit to me.
