The last of my creatures, something from the Time of Years. I hope you enjoyed them and if you ever get a chance to use them, let me know how it went.  Time to think of something new to write.

Moon Hunter

The village was late with its tribute which was strange.  They had no fight left in them and had done everything I had asked since I took control of the district. However, delays could not be tolerated so I sent a squad to take the tribute by force. That was three days ago with no word.  I doubted I would see the tribute or the squad I sent to retrieve it. There’s been little resistance activity in the region for the past four or five years, but it appeared they were back. It was time to make an example of the village and eliminate any hint of resistance.

Not knowing what I’d face, I took no chances, mustering almost a hundred orcs and a group of sniffers. I sent mounted scouts out our flanks to ensure there were no surprises as we moved up the road.  The trip took longer then I expected as the sun had already set and the moon was rising high in the sky as we neared the village. There was no smoke or any sign of light.  From a distance, the village appeared empty but it could be a trap, trying to draw us in. I pushed the sniffers forward with their keepers.  They were agitated and hard to control, but it was clear they had a scent.

The village only had a short earthen wall and the simple gate was open. The sniffers and a half dozen orcs entered the village as we waited. It didn’t take long before the screams started.  The goblins’ wails were like nothing I had ever heard. We charged forward pushing through the gate and over the walls to a scene of incredible carnage. The goblins and orcs were dead, torn apart by the fangs of two huge creatures that wavered in and out of my sight.

We were in the village square on a clear night, the moon almost full. We should have been able to see the creatures that struck at will, ripping apart the orcs. I yelled for the soldiers to form squares to protect themselves and hopefully give us a target. We could see the creatures for mere seconds after they struck.  The orcs cowered, more afraid then I’d ever seen them. Panic was setting in.

I ordered a withdraw from the village just as a cloud obscured the moon and I could finally see what we fought; two large serpents, their necks fringed with small tendrils that had bright glowing eyes and wicked fanged mouths. Finally able to see our foes, I ordered an attack, but the orcs stood transfixed as the serpents feasted. Those that could flee, did.  Once outside, I tried in vain to restore order. With my private guard, I rode at speed to the south.  Whatever they were, they were too much for my small force.

Fading in and out of the moonlight is a massive serpent, its neck ringed with almost a dozen writhing fanged tentacles. As you look into its eyes, you freeze, unable to move as it opens its mouth and prepares to strike.

The Moon Hunters are creatures from a primordial age that have been lost in time. They were an ancient scourge of the elthedar and may have been created by the darghul. Thought extinct, they have been forgotten; all records of their passing having long turned to dust. In an age where magic is rare they have become even more deadly.

Moon Hunters are large snakes with pale grey scales that react to moonlight, making the creature seemingly invisible. With their natural stealth and their ability to hide in the full light of the moon, they can easily surprise their foes. In normal light or in shadow, the swaying movement of its tentacles, and their bright, glowing eyes can immobilize up to nine separate victims (one per tentacle).

Allowing the Moon Hunter to chose its battlefield is dangerous. The best means of killing one is to keep it out of the moonlight or deny the moonlight entirely. In shadows, avoid looking directly at it to prevent it from using its bedazzle ability. If you can, avoid combat at night and track the beast to its lair in daylight.

Combat: The Moon Hunter is a dangerous and cunning killer who waits to hunt until the moon is high in the sky.  It will only attack in the open where it can use it’s ability to blend with the moonlight effectively making it invisible. In darkness, it can use the eyes on its tentacles to dazzle its foes, immobilizing them for its main attack. The creature can only attack one target at a time with it’s main bite, and the much less lethal bites of its nine tentacles. After centuries of hibernation, the Moon Hunter is both hungry and wary. It will continue combat as long as it feels it has the advantage. If denied the moonlight and having taken more then 50% damage, it will try to flee.

Bedazzle (Su): The swaying tentacles with their bright eyes can transfix their victims. Anyone looking directly at the Moon Hunter must make a DC 16 (Cha based) to avoid being fascinated.  A fascinated target can not take an action, loses it dexterity bonus to its armor class, and will remain frozen unless attacked or makes a saving roll (once per round).
Moon Blessed (Su): The Moon Hunter can blend with moonlight becoming effectively invisible until it attacks. As long as it remains in moonlight it gains all the advantages of total concealment (50% miss chance, immune from attacks of opportunity), gains a +2 attack bonus, and ignores its enemy’s dexterity bonus.
Primal Fear (Su): Buried deep in the psyche of the children of the elthedar is a fear of the Moon Hunter. Any race descended from the fey (including orcs and goblins) receive a -1 to hit and damage when attacking a Moon Hunter. If a child of the elthedar survives an attack of a Moon Hunter, it must make a DC 18 (Will save) or flee in fear.

Kane,

This is a scary one (especially for me, since I have a snake phobia Smiley)

Great work anyway (and I mean it for all the creatures you've done).

Now that your "MN fiend folio" is complete, would you care to gather the creatures in a .pdf that could be downloadable from the site?

Yeah, it would be great to have that in one place. What is next? Perhaps new take on the classes? What do you think of Pathfinder for Midnight?

Smeagol, Nightflier,

I'll make a pdf of the creatures this weekend when I have a little more time. As for doing classes, that's more of Doomed Hero and Dirigible's department.  I am playing with a new idea and a new format of writing.  I'm not sure how it will be received.  If I can work out a few things I may be able to post next week. I'm thinking it will only be 6-8 entries in this series. Glad you liked the creatures.

Well, I'm looking forward to see more of your work. I am running a game at Paizo's board and I can always use fresh ideas.

Kane,

Thanks for these creatures. All of them.

They are all excellent and make me want to use them immediately (alas, i'm not running Midnight at the moment).
