So I've got a big confrontation coming up in a couple of sessions and I need something scary to throw at my players, They're level 8 now and in an old underground fort trying to recover some old texts but a legate who has been hunting them is about to confront them. So far they have done pretty well nailing her minions mercs, orcs and the like when they tried to slow them down/capture them so I want to put in something inhuman and crazy to put some fear into them, any suggestions?

Do you want something that they will probably have to run from (like the Golem scene in Crown of Shadows) or do you want something that will be a challenging encounter that they are still fairly likely to defeat?
How nice of a GM are you?

I've always found Razors to be one of the scariest critters on Aryth. Kill them, and they can chest-burst out of someone nearby with a dash of demon-blood... oogly.

Doomed: looking for something they will be forced to flee from, I've put in a way for them to bring down the building which will destroy the texts and stuff to keep them out of the shadows hands but I need to force their hands into triggering it instead of standing and fighting..
Dirigible, Ooo, A razor could be a good idea, I haven't used them yet! But, if it engaged any one of them in hand to hand they would probably be torn apart pretty fast, maybe too fast to get the idea that they have to back off before someone is dead.

This was going to be my suggestion too. For my game I introduced an entire tribe of Orcs that have demon blood (the Razor Spine, a sub-tribe of the Blood Mother) just so that any one of them could explode into a Razor.

There are so many wonderfully scary monsters in Midnight that I wouldn't know where to start. I haven't officially started my Midnight campaign yet, but I'm collecting monsters and (more importantly) templates. Underdark has the Arachnoid template (in case Ardherin wasn't satisfied with his Ettercaps), and Eberon has the Horrid Beast template for turning fairly ordinary animals into monsters which exude acid. I also can't wait to sic a Faergral Dire Bear on my PCs and watch them wet themselves in terror.
