Blood Fog

Well it's Tuesday and time for a new creature. This time off to the Sea of Pelluria for the Blood Fog. Enjoy.
Kane
The Blood Fog:
We'd been waiting for the convoy out of Port Esben for two days. Our contacts had said that the troop ships would leave under cover of darkness and attempt a quick passage to Baden's Bluff with no escort. The Shadow actually believed they could avoid our raiders. They were wrong. We had four ships that had hidden in the Dragon Isles waiting for word on the next troop transports heading south. Four ships, 300 men, under command of Adan Norfall; they couldn't out run us.
Adan planned to catch the convoy three days out to sea well beyond the patrols of the Shadow's Navy. With flame and axe we would take one ship at a time knowing those wallowing barges couldn't escape. A long day of blood and six more troop transports would join the graveyard of ships at the bottom of the Pelluria. My ship, the Serpent's Fang, would have pride of place. We'd hunt them down and lead the rest of the ships in the first assault.
That morning, I knew they were close, but a dense fog covered the water. That late in the spring, it shouldn't have been there. We had to move slowly, watching for the lights of the other raiders. Finally I heard the snapping of sails and the drumming of the troop convoy as they called out to each other, trying to keep formation. I silenced my crew and counted the number of drums; three, four, six, ten, twelve. There should only be six ships, it was a trap; the fleet from Port Esben was with them. We couldn't fight that many. I had to warn the others.
Before I could send warning the screams began. Something was attacking the Shadow's fleet. I couldn't see who or what it was. The fog had become even denser, clinging to the sails and killing what little wind we had. Becalmed, I strained my eyes to see what was happening. Ahead to the left I could see a bright light; likely a ship on fire. Quietly, I passed word to set oars and start to back us away. The temperature began to drop and then I saw it, the fog was changing color turning blood red. The legends were true, it was Ahogya, the Blood Fog.
The need for stealth was over; if we stayed we would die like the sailors and orcs on those ships. I screamed for everyone to man an oar and pull as if all of the Shadow's demons were upon us. We had to get away while the orcs sated Ahogya’s hunger for blood. We rowed until the men fell exhausted over their oars. That could easily have been us, dying in the mist.
Our contacts in Baden's Bluff told us that the Shadow lost all six transports but only one warship. The convoy's escorts fled shortly after the attack begun. They saw first hand what was attacking and left the troop transports to their fate.

A chill fog spreads across the water, enveloping you. Out of the mist, tendrils of water flay your flesh. As life seeps from you, the fog turns a crimson red.
The Blood Fog are elementals that have been corrupted by the Shadow. It’s not known if they escaped from Theros Obsidia or were purposefully released into the Pelluria to plague House Norfall. They have now spread across the sea and have been sighted as far north up the Inshasa River as Three Fords and as far south as the Ardune. The Blood Fog have escaped the Shadow’s control and have become as much a threat to the Dark God’s shipping as to the Norfalls.
While normally encountered individually, there are stories of Ahogya, a massive (17 HD) Blood Fog that has gathered other of his ilk and attack as a pack. Ahogya is rumored to have even attacked shipping in sight of the Dark Tower.
Combat
: The corrupted elemental will approach underwater and unleash its Drear Fog to mask its approach. It will stay underwater as the fog builds and try to get within ten feet before attacking. It will attack one target at a time trying to take advantage of its flay special ability. If reduced to 25% of its starting hit points it will submerge and flee under cover of its fog.
The Blood Fog will rarely attack a target more then 20’ from the water, being a much poorer combatant on land and not willing to risk being able to quickly escape.
Drear Fog
(Su): The sure sign that the Blood Fog is near, is a cold fog that clings to skin and sails and impedes the wind (decreases wind speed by one level, e.g. severe to strong). The corrupted elementals can generate a fog bank 20’ by 20’/Hit Die. The Drear Fog grants the elemental concealment until it begins to drain blood from its target.
Drench
(Ex): The Blood Fog’s touch puts out torches, campfires, exposed lanterns, and other open flames of nonmagical origin if these are of Large size or smaller. The corrupted elemental can dispel magical fire it touches as dispel magic (caster level equals elemental’s HD).
Flay
(Ex): The Blood Fog gets its name from its ability to flay the flesh off its victims and drain their blood. If the Blood Fog successfully hits a single target with two slam attacks, it automatically drains 1d3 Constitution. For each point of constitution drained the Blood Fog regains 5 hp. The Blood Fog’s can never exceed 60 hp.
Tendrils
(Ex): The Blood Fog can shoot tendrils of water out from its body to twice its space value. These whipping tendrils allow the Blood Fog to destroy their victims before they can get in range to strike.
Water Mastery
(Ex): The Blood Fog gains a +1 bonus on attack and damage rolls if both it and its opponent are touching water. If the opponent or the elemental is touching the ground, the elemental takes a -4 penalty on attack and damage rolls. The corrupted elemental can be a serious threat to a ship that crosses its path. It can easily overturn small craft (5 feet of length per Hit Die of the elemental) and stop larger vessels (10 feet long per HD). Even large ships (20 feet long per HD) can be slowed to half speed.
Skills and Feats
: The Blood Fog is undetectable if it remains underwater and does not move. If it moves while underwater, it gains +14 to its hide and move silently.

Harrowed,
The big one is really nasty. Next week I go way down in power to a normal animal. But... after that I go really nasty. I was thinking I would end this series after teh next two creatures but I had some inspiration so there should be 4-6 more. Anyone else who wants to jump in with a few?

I've got some ideas, and you have inspired me. I kinda wanted to finish up my heroic path revisions before jumping into another project, but statting out a monster is a lot less time consuming so I just might do it.

Nasty creature. I love it
Feel free to keep bringing similar stuff, I'm currently translating them for the french midnight forum, which is barely alive at the moment. That kind of great stuff should bring them back to life

Glad its going well and sparking an interest in others to start writing. I've got 2 1/2 more done and will work on a few more after that. Expect a new creature every Tuesday for the next few weeks.

I'm thinking that I'm going to take a standard Midnight creature and do a new spin on it.
