Life is slowing down so I'm back to work on requests. McCharm wanted a Merc group that works as sort of an "A-Team" for the Order of the Shadow. Here is the first of four. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you the horror of the Western Front, pride of the Blackwood Company, and the Breath of Izrador .... Gaunt.

Gaunt – Male Caransil Wildlander 8 / Blackguard 4

During the darkest nights, at times when their morale is at the lowest, when it feels that the Whispering Wood can only mutter about their doom, the Caransil speak of the Blackwood Company, of the traitorous fey that joined Izrador army.

Of these traitors, the fey dread one of the Blackwood Company most of all. A fey known only as Gaunt. Many do not believe that he exists, that he is only a legend spread by the Legates to demoralize the fey. The wisest and oldest know the truth. They let the younger warriors think only that Gaunt is a legend. This legend, however, gleefully hunts down his own species in the name of Izrador.

Gaunt’s mother was a elvish whore to a Sarcosian legate in the Black Tower. She became pregnant from another elvish slave. The child would have been an embarrassment to the legate, a sign he feared that he could not control his slaves, so he killed the elvish whore and her lover. The baby was sold to the Blackwood Company.

The traitorous fey named him Gaunt due to his sickly pale skin and extremely narrow frame. He was told repeatedly that his parents had been killed by other fey and that the Blackwood Company rescued him from death. As Gaunt grew older so did his hate for the fey and all that they represented. Showing a natural skill at hunting he joined the Blackwood’s scouts and quickly became one of their best, and most vicious, hunters.

Gaunt was transferred to the elvish front and legend quickly grew. His knowledge of nature and the ways of the forest allowed him to lead the Shadow’s forces around Caransil ambushes. His patrols probed the deepest into the forest and inflicted the most causalities on the defenders. He was the pioneer of many of the most vicious tactics that are now commonly used. Gaunt was one of the first to direct Fell elves back through their own lines. The elves would be forced to kill their miraculously returned friends as those same friends developed hunger for blood and flesh.

Gaunt’s natural skill for terror and fiendishness did not go unnoticed by the Order of the Shadow. He was recruited into a small order known only as The Breath of Izrador. This group is made of different races and sexes with only one thing in common: They are all ruthless, cunning, and sadistic killers loyal to Izrador. Led through vile rituals by the Order of the Shadow Gaunt became a Blackguard.

Loyal only to Izrador, Gaunt now serves in a group of mercenaries that are led by an Ogre Magi Legate.

Tactics: A veteran of years on the Western front there are few ambushes and tactics that he hasn't witnessed first hand. This knowledge mated with his cunning and ruthlessness makes Gaunt one of the most dangerous fey in the armies of the Shadow.

Gaunt prefers to cripple over killing. He knows that a injuried enemy drains resources and demoralizes other soldiers. In an ambush Gaunt will prefer to attack the young and women, to the same end to demoralize.

When he can he will attack with his bow from longer range using Shard arrows. Fey will commonly attempt to rescue fallen comrades allowing Gaunt to cripple the rescuers. His Frost arrows are used to the same effect. The Western front elves are skilled with injuries from fire but frost damage is not as common, a weakness that Gaunt exploits with his usual ruthlessness.

Gaunt will occasionally kill elves, again women and children, in hopes that they will return as Fell. He will trick them into thinking that they have been rescued and sneak them back through elven lines into refugee camps near the front. These "rescued" Fell can cause a great deal of damage before they are killed. This trick has proved less effective recently, the last generation of children have been told stories of a gaunt, pale elf who summons elves back from the dead as Fell to eat their own kind. Some Fell upon rising remember this tale and flee.

In melee Gaunt is a cautious attacker. He will rely on his Combat Expertise to defend while getting the measure of an opponent. When possible he will Sunder an opponents weapons and armor. Similar to his other tactics Gaunt will reduce an enemy to near their death and leave them to call other fey to their rescue. Of course this crippled fey only serves to lead more elves in Gaunt's ambushes.
