Hi,

I first became embroilled in Midnight when I read a paragraph on Steel Hill in the first edition campaign setting and decided to draw a map...this simple act led me on a great adventure during which I met some virtual friends that became real. Since then, I've honed my cartography skills, and I'd like to think my writing skills are passable. So, it only seems fitting that I return to Midnight bearing gifts...

I've recently been working on a conversion of Forge of Fury for a 4e campaign I'm playing with my kids.  It's a derivative points-of-light campaign setting, but I can't help letting my Midnight influences creep in.

As usual I never do things by halves (yes, OK Kane, I'm anal - we Brit's prefer to call it obsessive compulsive ) and I've written up the adventure notes as though it were a published module, complete with maps, etc. I've been trying to think of where I might post it for the use of the wider RPG community and I noted whilst skimming through the thousands of threads on AtS that someone was thinking about using a Forge conversion in their Midnight campaign a while back.  I thought that some of the material I've adapated might be of use to you guys (though probably not the individual in question as the thread is about 2 years old!). The story wouldn't really fit in Midnight, but a lot of the encounters might and I've done maps for each. So, if you guys are interested I could post it up - assuming Nif talks me through how to upload the files.

I think I can work out how to post a file here, so I'll post up a taster of my re-envisioning of Forge of Fury.

Enjoy and let me know if you'd like me to post more.

Cheers,

Shadowfane

Thanks guys.

Babayaya, I used Photoshop to do this. I'll see if I can compress the files so they sneak under the 1MB limit for posts. The jpgs are pretty large, but the Photoshop files are enormous - the Mountain Door psd file is 546MB! THe reason for this is because I do them at very high resolution and size so that I can make decent looking battlemaps for the individual areas - really adds amibence to the game (for me, anyhow).

An example is the rift hall on the Mountain Door map. Hopefully you can make out the rope bridge. In the adventure I have it that the PCs need to make an Acorbatics check to cross (and they are under fire from gnoll archers). If they fail, they get a chance to catch hold. If they fail this check (or the orignial by greater than 5), they fall into the rift.  When I played it with my kids, two of the characters failed their Acrobatics checks by greter than 5 as soon as they stepped onto the rope bridge! Down they went (and I almost had tears from one of my sons). However, out of the frying pan into the fire as they landed on a large web spun across the rift by giant spiders. It was a fantastic encounter where the PCs became separated and had to fight two sets of enemies at once.

Anyway, the maps...

Come into My Parlour

I'm guessing that S is for spider and C is for cocoon, but what's D for?

Actually, S is for centipede scuttler (i know, obtuse!). Think giant blind centipedes with pale, scabrous skin that glistens with milky secretions and sharp, powerful mandibles (Dirigible and Kane may remember these from my PbP years ago).

D stands for Deathjump spider and C stands for cave spider (a smaller version of the deathjump - the size of the markers should be quarter of the indicated size). The spiders lay in wait for the centipedes that come to scavenge the debris the gnolls throw into the rift and which is caught in the webs. However, both sets of vermin are happy to munch on any hapless adventurers that fall into their trap.

If people want to use the maps for their own purposes, I can take off the creature markers.

Cheers,

Shadowfane

Mr Iain J. Brogan of Midnight fame speaking of passable writing skills?

Fury of Shadow I say! Grin

As for uploading, if you have ready files you can use the dowloads part of the site, which has a higher limit then the 1Mb per post, also if you got a high package you want added to the downloads and breaks the limit, make a dummy file upload it and send me the real thing through e-mail so i can replace it. Wink

Posting things on this forum software is a lot more intuitive than it used to be on PhPbb days of AtS.

Awesome work too, your maps are way ahead of the old Lya maps.

Thanks, Niff.

Actually, it might be better to decide what people want to use, the whole adventure or the cannibalised maps, or encounters. I can then format accordingly and probably make the file sizes smaller too, as they dont' need to be at the ridiculously high resolution I've got them at for my own purposes.

I'll wait to see what level of interest I get and if people want the use of the maps.

Cheers,

Shadowfane.

Thanks Niff; it's nice to be back and indulging my muse once more. It's been a hectic few years! And thanks for looking after the setting and the site - we all owe you a lot for the dedication you put in to keeping this place going.

Let me add my voice to the chorus of "wow"s! Thanks for sharing! I was also thinking of possibly running Forge of Fury as a sequel to my current Crown of Shadows campaign. I'd be happy with a high res version, as I would consider printing your maps to serve as battle mats, as well!  Would it be really difficult to make smaller size "overview" maps, as well as high res battle mats? I really have no idea how difficult formatting these maps would be... so ultimately, whatever you feel you are able to do, I'll be happy with!

Hi Shadowfane,

Hadn't had yet a chance to say welcome back and great to see you posting again Smiley

Sadly my own Midnight Campaign (ran on Fantasy Grounds) came to a halt and who knows when i'll be back to GMing Midnight, and even though it might be some time before I'll get to use things posted up here i always loved to read and get ideas.

So in other words: post up and don't be shy Wink

On the matter of file size. Since i started using Fantasy Grounds I learned how to work with images on my computer (more than i did before), and for my digital maps I use the PNG file format for both good quality and small size.

cheers,

Hi Arnon,

Nice to 'see' you again and thanks for the welcome.

Image file size is far more complicated than is should be  Tongue Interesting about the PNGs. I guess the consideration is whether you want the final product to be printed or displayed. Can you let me know what resolution you typically use for your png maps?

Twiceborn, thanks for the comments. Battlemaps are easy, I already have most of them formated as pdfs so they'll print at the correct size as overlapping sections on an A3 printer. If people would prefer overlapping A4 sections that would be possible too.

I think what I might do is finish off the adventure for my campaign and then have a go at converting it to Midnight.  I actually think a lot of what I've written should translate quite easily and with a bit of a tweak to the back-story and the main antagonist, we should be good to go.

For instance, the adventure opens with the PCs helping defend a village (built within the walls of an old fortress) against an orc warband led by an eladrin stormsinger - just change him to a legate and we're good. They then travel through occupied terrtiory, trying to avoid the orc warbands, to rendevouz with a dwarven contact who will take them upriver to Kundrahar - an old dwarven holdfast now occupied by orcs. They then need to break/sneak into Kundrahar and stop an eladrin sorceress from activating an ancient artefact and devastating the surrounding lands.  I was thinking: switch her to a legate seeking something in the dwarven ruins and the PCs racing to get to it first to steal it from under the Shadow's nose, and we're pretty much good to go! Hmm, perhaps I could call it Under the Shadow's Nose...  twisted

Kane's critqued some of what I've done, so it will be interesting to see what he thinks about converting the adventure to Midnight. And of course if anyone else would like to get involved, let me know Wink

Cheers,

So what does Kane think; he thinks go for it.  Happy to help with the flow of the adventure and editing but I have little knowledge of 4E.  I'd recommend finishing up the current version of the adventure and working out some of the conversion (astirax abilities, Midnight specific mods to 4E) here on the site were some of the more rules savvy people can chime in.

OK, now I've received endorsement (twisted) I'll crack on with it.

If you're interested in helping out - with story, encounters, rule conversions, etc, register your name in this thread and we can divy up the work.
