Hi guys,
It took a while to draw this one but I finally made it. I long wanted to do a map similar to pardrum in CoS, and finally it's done, Hurray!
Now I have to do the oher levels  Roll Eyes

Hope you'll like this one. Feel free to use it in your games. At least, i will feel happy to see it used by Midnight fans Wink
As you can see, i have used a texure for the backgournd, rather than just plain black color. It's nicer, to me. What about you?

Wow. These are really amazing. Especially that last one. What inspired them?

Thanks,
Remember the map of Pardrum in CoS? This is the only canon map we have to get an idea of what do the dwarfs' hold look like.
The curve pattern of these holds is really innovative, I think, and I wanted to use it and create new strongholds, with different levels, but still the same curving scheme.

This one is a lost stronghold, named Khal-Uldur. There will be another one, even bigger called Alorin. Now that I'm used to it, I'll do the other map faster Grin

What program do you use to make these? Seems more technical than most art programs I've seen.

Photoshop only, except with the first one which has some handdrawn stuff in it, but very basic.
It's not really difficult in fact, once you know how to do it, and if you know how to use the layers efficiently.

It's actually only a 3 layers file.
- The rough border (the white one)
- the main layer, the rooms and alleys
- the black texture layer

All the magic is about the layer styles, which are on the main layer. It does the job quite nicely.
Just:
- add inner shadow. Vary the settings depending the scale of the map.
- add pattern overlay (sometimes, you can't do that and you have to create a new layer/ create clipping mask, but it's the same effect basically). There are the squares

If you're interested in such a thing, give me an email (by PM), I'll send you the source Wink , the PSD file
Unfortunately, this can only be done (I mean the way I did) with Photoshop. Gimp doesn't support layer styles and this is where Gimp doesn't stand against PS Sad
I wish I could do it with Gimp though...

I tried using Dundjinni to make maps for a while, but most computers (including mine) can't handle the scale I was trying to work at. I was making a full-scale map of Kurgan Falls (from CoS) but by the time I got into the detail, adding trees and rubble and shrubs and stuff, it started taking upwards of 1/2 an hour to save and load.

Made me sad. I was really happy with how that map was going.

I've never used Dundjinni but I know this kind of software have high requirements in term of clock speed, memory and such. At the moment, the psd file of the map of Eredane, for instance, needs 2min to be saved. It's quite a lot when you do it every 10 min just to make sure you avoid any bad crash and loss of work. I completely see what you mean

For finally, did you make a hand drawn map?

No. I'm a mediocre artist at best, and there's some people I game with that are pretty amazing and take requests, so I got out of the habit of doing my own game-related drawings.

Here is a new map. Still underwork but good enough to get your opinion I hope
This is the style I was talking about with the 3 versions of Eredane I'd like to make.
This very map isn't about Midnight but it could if you want to use the final map for that purpose
It's actually a map for MERP/ HARP adventure

It seems my laptop reached its limitations here and dhis style will not happen until oing everything but a line takes a while to be processed. I really struggle to finish it, to say the least. So Eredane with this style will not happen until a while, until in fact I buy the IMac of my dreams Tongue

Anyway, I would like to ask you wether this style fits Midnight or not. I'm happy with it but I also would like to keep the feeling of MN and Black and white artworks are quite good for that. Do you reckon it would be OK?

Hi guys,
The map of "Trenth city" is finished. Have a look Wink

Since I really like the style, I'm planning to map one big city from MN. I was wondering redoing Baden's Bluff. There's a map in "Under The Shadow"  but only B/W and  very simple which can be useful.
I can also do something else but which one should I pick? I would like to do one that can actually really be used by the community, and not something just for my own personal pleasure.
What do you think? Baden's Bluff/ Bastion/ Why not Port Esben which is described in Honor and Shadow and is quite playable.

If someone is even happy to write a short adventure (I can help with synopsis but my english is ... helpless ... ), we could even build up something more important.
I've been trying to write something called "Whispers in Shadows", a serie of add-ons designed to develop places of Eredane. Basically, a couple of map with descriptions, a short story an a 2-3 pages adventure. 10-15  pages in total. Not much but enough the flesh out Eredande with new material.
What do you think?

Feel free to comment guys, I'm more than eager to hear your feedback.
As much as I love this style, I still need to get opinion about whether or not this kind of map fit the Midnight setting.

I very much like the style and design. If something is missing it's only an indication of the scale of the map but it feels very midnight-ish to me.

I also find that the buildings in the sit are all pretty much the same sze may be one or two larger places might be a good addition. But it's perfect.

Interestingly, I have the poster sized map of Erdane from Fury and Shadow on my wall next to my computer. As soon as I opened the full sized map of Trenth, I started looking along the Eren to see where it would fit in.

Just based on the topography, Trenth would make a great arial view of Zorgetch, with the army encampment inside the walls and the human farmers surrounding forced to work to feed them. The inside of the walls is even set up in haphazard lines with brownish stains from who knows what (much the way I imagine orcish camps) while the outside has a collection of structures on the lower left that are very neat, set up in perfect rows (much the way I imagine hobgoblin camps).

The scale is actually on the top-left side of the map. Maybe you missed it Wink

there are many houses, indeed, that are very close to each other in terms of size. This is a point I was worrying of. And they are also all square based. I'll probably go back into it and rewamp the houses, make them rectangle this time Tongue

Thanks for the comments Wink

... or make the story explain why all houses are close in term of design (traditionnal architecture etc..).

I generaly like a realiistic design, but it is also sometime amusing to have a design (specially from a flaw within it) to be the source of a story.

I'm not suggesting the laziest way, just take it as an option if the rework could be quite a heavy workload, as I'm sure you have also further interesting maps projects !

For me, I just regret the wild areas to be a little browny compared to what seems to be agricultural ones.
But don't bother, I played to long an elf so forests are never big enougth.

Great work in any case.

This map was a commission and the guy's pretty happy with it so I'm not gonna change anything but all your comment make sense. I'll keep them in mind for the next map. Posting is actually all about this, I guess, always going forward and improving Wink
