Anybody heard of this????

The short of it, is that this is a play-by-(e)mail empire building game. It has lots of rules and is very complex... It took almost a year of "nagging" by a close friend of mine, and overcoming the "fear of complexity" to finally join the game...

And let me tell you it is excellent!!!

Most Lords of the Earth games take place on Earth, starting from about 1000 bc to 2000 ad. Some games start there, some later... really, it depends on the whim of the GM. I believe most games either happen during Classical period or Medieval period.

This game, however, takes place in a very detailed homebrew FANTASY world created (and played in) by the GM for about 30 years, called Theeurth. There are many races and many nations and empires. From strong to weak (both economically and militarily) from remote to right in the middle of things.

Turns can take any-time between 2 weeks to about a month to resolve, and the resolts can be seen in a very detailed and well written Newsfax by the GM.

Check out the site. See the Map. Read an entry or two in the Newfax. And if you feel up to a challenge.

Hm. I'll have to look a little closer at this, although the $5 a post/turn/whatever-they're-calling-it thing throws me off a little.

I saw that too. Quite the racket, although I'd imagine the guy running it puts a lot of time into it. Nice to get paid for all that work.

It is a lot of work... and hard work too. But the result is fantastic.

And it's $5 per turn, not month. The turnout for a year goes something between 7-9 turns i believe (the ideal of 1 per month is usually not achieved, as I understand it).

You need patience to play.

This was my first turn. I received an empire with and orc horde squatting in one of my better provinces, a northern neighbor who tried to ake advantage and raid one of my territories, but a rather good military with some good commanders and not a bad infrastructure... I did not take any serious action this turn, but i'm on edge to see how it turns...

Are you the one who took over Saavend?

I was looking at that nation also before deciding to take the Grand Empire of Mekebele (all the way down near the south-western part of the map).

In any case, welcome aboard.

I recommend that you look in the Archive and find every Newsfax entry about your empire and read it in chronological order, as well as reading that of your neighbors.

There are other recommendations of course, but the best one (i believe) is to just sit down with the turnsheet and the rules-book and understand what you are looking at.

Yes I did take Saa'Vend. I am the first player to take it as Scott has been running it for the first couple of turns. Not much history since it was just formed recently. But that also means that thier is not much in the way of allies and such. Scott is a great help and gave me some good advice as to what is going on in the region and the potential in that area.

Its a newly formed Confederation.Mostly Lizardmen and a few humans. I have some Orcs in the mountains to the north. The Shattered Lands (Wastelands/Desert) to the west. One of the most powerful nations, right now, as a neighbor to the east/south east. And a dragon to the south that is rampaging into the provinces of the large nation. Also said nation is trying to convert the people of the Confederation over to thier worship of the God Emporer.  Looks like I am going to have to stay on the good side of the powers that be and get some trade arraigngments set up with others and just concentrate on building up my nation to survive.

A couple questions for those of you that have joined.

Why is the Due Date Jan 03, but today is Jan 19th? Is the game still current? The site does seem to have quite a few broken links.

Are the nations leaders characters, with stats and ablities, or just political figure heads? Do they have ablities?

Do you pick the nation you are starting with or is it assigned?

What do you like about the game, it sounds like it may be my cup of tea, but would you mind selling it to me a little bit? Smiley

Due date has passed. At the start of each turn each player receives a Turnsheet with all the data about his Empire, the player then has two weeks to complete the order form and turn it in (agreements with other nations, forgeing alliances, etc. are done via e-mail in-character by the players)

Quote

Each nation has several "Leader" units. These are the King, Heir, Prince, Lieutenants, Allied Leaders (i think i might be forgetting something). These people are born and are generated by the GM with 4 basic stats: Combat, Diplomacy, Charisma, Magic (a fifth stat called Administration is secret and not known by the player); the stats range from 2-11 (2d6-1, i believe) with A=10, and B=11. So a leader might look like so: K68A0 (King, Combat 6, Diplomacy B, Charisma A, Magic 0)... Most leaders have a magic of 0. These stat influence the various actions a leader might take.

You need to pick a nation from those available for play, they are usually listed on the homepage.

Its complexity make it fun. There are so many things you can do, so many ways you can expand, build, go to war, collapse, Things to build, regions to conquer. And since this is a fantasy world: strange events happen, dragon run rampant, magical artifacts are found, etc..

And you interact with your neighbors (other players) usually in character (but not necessarily always IC) to forge alliances, warn them not to expand on you terrioty or send their priest with their heathen religion somewhere else...

I could probably go on, by i have to go now...

I'll try to answer any question, but remember i'm a newcomer to this as well Smiley

Thanks for the quick response.
I've been reading through the site and found the basic rulebook from another main site.

Will continue reading, so this may asnwer the next question. How did you decide on the nation you picked? Read the history, or just picked?

OK, so looking at the list of nations, I see and looked up some values. I'm thinking I want a strong economy, a nations needs money.

52 : The Eastern Conorrian Empire ESI: 72,   TV: 4.6,   MSI: 47.7
58 : The Free Cities of Ruanach     ESI: 64,   TV: 8.2,   MSI: 43.7

Eastern Cnorrian Empire has a higher ESI but Ruaunach seems to have a significantly higher TV. In layman's terms, What does that mean?

MSI Military Strength Index
ESI Economic Strength Index
TV Trade Value

So ones that catch my attention.

Kolyut Hegemony is listed as a Recommended Position but in the Turn 27 MSI, has a player listed. Plus it souns like it has a lot of problems.

The Eastern Conorrian Empire seems good.

What are the Secret Empires?

Any insight or suggestions would be appreciated.

I think the MSI is not updated. As the factions of Conorrian Empire  (it was one big empire and broke because of civil war a turn or two ago... big shock waves) are not available as far as I know.

Kolyut is a good place with nice regions and cities. Hobgoblins if i remember correctly. Remember that you do not have to continue the wars of your predecessor... it's one of the "advantages" of changing players. You can just get in touch with the neighbor and say: "Hey, how about we stop the war nonsense and start working together"... that is, unless you (or the neighbor) don't want to...

Secret Empires are secret societies, cults, etc. that operate withing a nation (or more). I'm not sur ehow it works exactly, so you'll need to ask Scott (the GM) about that.

Looks like I still have time to decide. Another week or so before the current turn is processed.

I was looking at going with the Kasadir Rebels, but they are being forced to move, a better area, but will be very, very tiny. I think was the description.

A couple of other nations may become available to choose from, 1 human and 1 dwarf ranked decently, but a little thicker in the fray. The human nation is farily close to Mekebele.

Tiringol seems to be in a nice position to grow and is north of Saa'Vend.

It sucks having to wait for the turn to end, i'm going to drive myself crazy until i've picked a place and started my first move.

Looks like i'll be going with The Imperial Realm of Zikuyu.
That site doesn't seem to have it's own forums does it? I hate to keep bumping this thread in this community. I can toss up a quick forums if wanted/needed.

Yep.
I joined it yesterday.
I'm excited to get started, kind of sucks I have to wait until the next turn to get any of my information. Oh well.
I am reading the core rules and going over the map, looking at my neigbors, but hard to do much without my nations actual numbers and not knowing the personalities of my neighbors
Not sure if you guys are wanting to cooperate by default, being from the Shadow family or not but Mekebele is pretty close to me Wink

I was looking for information on the website, when all I could find was a broken link I sent an email to the admin; this was the link he sent back http://lords.throneworld.com/ Does this look like the right place? (While it sounds very interesting, I am still not quite sure how the whole deal works, or what is actually available)

I think that is the link to the main producer of the game?

http://www.theeurth.com/lords54/ is for the game we have joined. It's alot of information, but looks like a lot of fun. I love Strategy and role playing, that is why appeals to me.

I'm in the same position. I am just waiting for the current turn to be finished so I can find out what happened the last turn (5 Years) to my nation and start planning for the future. I'm not sure if I am anywhere near enough to the two of you to be able to have any kind of  interaction.

Jester,
You are pretty far away.

Arnon's actually within range of me.

I threw up http://www.twilightsshadow.com/phpBB3/ just in case. So we can talk shop, share info, whatever without hijacking threads here at the shadow. If not used, no big. Doesn't cost anything.

Orien,
Look through http://www.theeurth.com/lords54/ Look at the map, the Newsfax gives a little summary/news article of what each nation did last turn.
The Achive will take you back turn for turn.
The MSI link ranks the nations.

At the http://lords.throneworld.com/players/loterule/rules.html site has the core rules, pretty intense reading.

Jester, you are a little far away from us...

Kimco, we sure are within range but if i remember correctly (don't have the turnsheet available to me now) we do not even have trade relation due to none of us having at least Sea Rutters from one sea port to another. I think some of your northern neighbors have sea rutters leading to my port city, but i don't have to their (this means that they get the better deal in this trade rout... untill i map the sea back to them that is).

Alright, fine. Soon as I get home this evening, I think I'm going to inquire abou the Secret Empires. Playing some behind-the-scenes cult thing sounds really amusing to me.

fyi.

Here is what he said to me about Secret Empires.

The Secret Empires are, well, secret.  If you haven't previously played LOTE, I strongly urge you not to start with a secret empire.  They're difficult to play and difficult to love because there is so little interaction with the other players.  In any case, in order not to reveal too much, players who want an SE have to agree to take them sight-unseen.  Suffice it to say that very, very few players stay on as Secret Empires.  They're just not that appealing to most people.
