Yes, there is. I am currently gathering ideas for more articles.

EDIT: currently mining JRR Tolkien's "Children of Hůrin" for ideas. It's quite nice about curses, cursed items, doomed and tragically-fated heroes, interesting NPCs, ideas for wilderness and thug campaigns... I would actually be an ideal mini-campaign if it were set, let's say, in the beginning years of the Last Age.

Hiding from Shadow

« Reply #76 on: September 12, 2009, 08:21:42 AM »

Hi everyone

Ive written something about a skill which could be useful for Resistence groups. I know things needed are Covenant Items and NPCs, but I think this skill fits really good the Resistence lack of weapons and the problems they have to carry them unnoticed. I also attach some examples from Internet, and as always, my language will have to be polished, I'm afraid. Comments are welcome and of course you are free to use it if you like the idea.

A new skill for Midnight: knapping stone tools

One of the biggest problems Resistence has is how to move and use weapons in a world where every man who carries one is killed at once. Here it is an old craft which could be useful, at least, for some kind of weapons.

Knapping flint tools is the ability to choose flint nodules and hit them carefully in order to get stone chips that can be later transformed into tools and weapons. Of course, only small weapons can be made, as arrowheads and maybe spear points, and they can be used only several times before they are broken or lose their sharp edge. Some other tools can be made: small knives and tools for piercing and skinning, and maybe some that can be fixed together in order to get a bigger tool, as a sickle.

Although weak, flint tools have several advantages. First of all, they are free, so they can be easily discarded in a moment of danger without any regret. Secondly, as they can be knapped in just a little time, they can be carried as a normal stone which doesn’t raise suspicions around. They are really sharp, although they can break easily. There are some problems, too, with flint tools. As we told before, they are weak and lose the edge within some uses. The stones’ weight can be a problem, too, if you are carrying too many. Flint weapons are not the definitive solution, but they can help to survive in the wilderness, pass unarmed through a gate or give you a chance if weapons are scarce.

How to make flint weapons

Make flint stones is a new skill, based on dexterity. It can be taught by not many people, but most wildlanders, a lot of elves and some Dornish know how to do that.  Only flint stones have the quality to be knapped. As flint is not everywhere, it’s up to the GM if it is actually available where the PCs are. After that, flint stones are easy to find (no need for a search roll), although special stones (very long, for example) can be more difficult to find. Flint normal tools are made quickly: maybe half an hour for an arrow and one hour for a spear point. After made, flint stones are really sharp and must be handed carefully. Flint weapons are mainly used as throwing ones, as they broke easily. There’s one chance in four that a flint weapon breaks when the hit fails (hitting a shield or an armor, losing away), and even one in five if it hits their target (maybe hitting a bone). After ten uses, flint stones lose their edge and they are usually discarded. Flint stones make the same damage as normal ones because of their sharpness, and they have the same range as metal ones.

I like it, but it seems M2E already covered part of this topic with the "Shard arrows" mechanics (M2E page 145). What do you think?

Hi everyone from Spain, and happy holidays!!

This forum seems quite asleep since a long time... Is ToS 3 stopped? I know you guys who work on it have a life outside Midnight, but Is it working? Is it necessary to submit more material in order to complete the volume, or is it just a edition problem? If it is a problem with scarcity of material, maybe we could make all an effort to post new NPC, nexus, ideas... to finish the book. If it is just you don't have time do dedicate to this project now, then there's no problem at all (I would like to help, but not being a native english speaker seems quite a problem). Anyway it's a pity the after so much work you made we couldn't finish ToS 3... Resistence deserves it Smiley

I don't pretend to hurry anybody, of course (I know what to have a busy life is), just a bit of worry about this wonderful project

Hi Arioth,

Actually this project is currently stalled, for various real life reasons and due to the fact that I did not find out how to write some pieces as I wished to write them. And I don't want to release it until they're done.

It might take me some time to write down, but when it's done, I'll give the baby to anyone who's willing to edit and/or illustrate the thing.

In the meanwhile, everybody is absolutely free to contribute to TOS3 (remember that this one is focused on the resistance) on the dedicated boards. Be warned, though: not everything might make it into the final release, and I might make some heavy changes to selected articles before they're published in TOS3.

Then I'll try and move on to other Midnight projects.

Smeagol, I would like to contribute a new player race for the ToS3, but I don't really know where exactly.

Hi smeagol,
I'm bringing this up, in the hope you could find renewed hope to bring the project to light.

I'm not coming empty-handed, though, as I offer my time and patience for that "proofreading, editing and layout" you were looking for. I'm meticolous enough for the job Wink
If Dain could spare his previous layouts, then, it would be an easy task.

Here I am.
Just give me a shout  Wink

I just realised I didn't upload the whole package in the download area. My bad
I'll do it as soon as possible.
Thanks for nicely showing that omission Wink
