Smeagol,

I'm happy to assist.  Maybe if we can keep the volume shorter, we can make editing it and getting it out easier.

IIntroduction: a Harsh Life Under the Shadow
(restrictions on travel and how to bypass them, smuggling, bribery, etc?)

Chapter One: the Pirate Princes

Chapter Two: Roland's raiders

Chapter Three: the Avenging Knives

Chapter Four: the Liberators (halfling)

Chapter Five: Sarcosan resistance

As I've said, some existing material could be added: check out the Organizations in this site: White Mother Sect, Hidden Hand, Chandrahaal, Channeler's League, Protectors, Paladins Reborn, Southern Alliance, the Cendaran...

For the resistance "assets", why not use the elven sanctuaries (places on aryth) and the greater spirits (creatures)?

There are also things about permissions for travel, the orc schism, bribery, intimidation, smuggling, the fleet of red sails (stormhold resistance navy), rogue techniques, etc...

See, we should also talk about the defenders, they are truly a unique feature of the resistance in Eredane, and also a bit on Erenlanders.

Yes, Defenders are quite underdescribed in Midnight, although they're a great part of the setting. How does one become a Defender? How do they survive? Can they be assembled as a resistance group?

Actually, the small info that "Against the Shadow" contained about each Midnight class's goals (remember?) could be expanded into something more, that would be immediately usable: quests, goals,  tools of the trade, contacts, tactics, etc.

Is there any chance of sneaking in a chapter on the races not covered by the source books, i.e. the half breeds, gnomes, and halflings. Also maybe something on the classes not covered in details as we have Sorcery and Shadow and Steel and Shadow, but nothing for the rogue/thief.

When discussing traveling, bribes and smuggling for that matter, how about having a section on forgery. I mean how hard is it to forge travel papers, how hard is it to make false papers for a shipment of food, how hard would it be a forge a fake release order for a prisoner condemned to death.

I will be glad to help on the maps, especially if we plan to draw small camps, caves, town or cities, whatever.

Then, that could also  be a good opportunity to write something about the heir of Erenland, hidden somewhere. I already wrote something about him, just need to translate the text.

If I can help, I will...

You might check my campaign wiki bible to see if anything of interest jumps out at you for inclusion or development.

I'll have to think about what part though...

Hello:

I am interested in contributing, and have some material on travel difficulty for groups. Can you give me a deadline to hand in material for submissions?

Thanks!

I'd certainly like to help.  I had much fun with my contributions to Vol 2 (limited though they were).  I'd like to help out to a greater extent in Vol 3.  And i have more time nowadays too!  Smiley

Hiding from Shadow

« Reply #19 on: January 09, 2008, 03:37:20 PM »

That's nice to see people reacting positively.

I've been thinking along those lines:

Chapter I: A Harsh Life under the Shadow.

Basically, it describes the hazards of occupied areas in the Last Age, and, more importantly, provides advice on ways to overcome such hazards (how to travel unrestricted: disguise, forged papers-tokens / how to successfully hide weapons or magic items, etc.)

This part could be designed as pieces of advice from an old resistant to his young apprentice. Basically, it is meant as a bag of tricks for PCs: how to escape pursuit, how to make a prison break, how not to be spotted in a city, learning to trick an astirax or a legate, etc...

Chapter II: Tools

This section covers new special items that can be used by the resistance for its purposes:
- Nif's old .pdf about superior crafted items (ie, more powerful than masterwork but still not radiating magic)
- communications (whistles, "telegraphic" (ie, "morse") language),
- new weapons (especially: uses of sleight of hand for poisoning food or wells, but also garrotte, etc.)
- uses for cyphers and codes, and how to crack the Shadow's codes
- more uses for herbalism, especially the herbal tattoos that disappeared from M2E
- more foldable items (hideable lockpicks, etc)
- etc

Chapter III: Places & resources

This section covers:
- hideouts (urban and in the wilds)
- caches (food, weapons, disguise, etc.)
- hidden nexi
- friendly agents ("contacts") who can shelter the PCs for a while, provide them with fresh information, arrange meetings with other important people, fence stolen goods, etc.

Chapter IV: Resistance groups

Covers:
- the structure,
- key members,
- resources,
- modus operandi,
etc. of several organizations,
- as well as their area of influence.

Story hooks are also welcome, as well as interactions between groups that know each other.

Chapter Five: Magic

Insert:
- your covenant items of choice here, complete with story, limitations, etc.
- new spells
- new rituals (as ritual magic is much more discrete)
- etc.

Chapter Six: The "Criminal Connection"

This section is devoted to several criminal organizations or individuals that can be "hired" (for the right price, of course...) to help the PCs. Can they be trusted?

Chapter Seven: Quests and Motivations

This section is all about what missions the resistance would want to achieve. Basically, it is meant as a mine of story hooks for the DM to throw at his PCs.

So, how about that layout?

A very nice and detailed outline there, but I want to throw in my coppers with a few other comments that appeared. Expansion of "related information" in regards to races and classes. Many supplemental books often contain at least a short section expanding on existing information, but getting more detailed as it relates to the supplement's subject matter.

Would there be a place/chapter squeezed in that covered expanded info on the way the different races handle the Resistance (if a race is likely to have more active participants, how does the average member of said race feel about the Resistance, likelihood of finding other supporters in said race... other people probably have better/more ideas in this vein), and then the classes - how they contribute to the Resistance, their key roles, etc...

I'm unreliable, I'm sad to say, but if there are little places here and there I can help tweak, or write something that isn't numbers... I'm willing. I'm too far out of touch with actual gaming lately to be a WHOLE lot of help, but my creative bone is not dead.

Glad to see there are contributors. I think we should proceed with a forum sub-section, where everyone who's interested can post "articles", stating which chapter they would be a part of.

Then "someone" (Nif?) would have to gather the participants' efforts into a coherent whole.

Do we agree on this proceeding?
