Thanks Bihlbo.  I'm glad you're enjoying it (and glad someone is actually reading them...heh heh).

Session 11

Our last session had the players stuck in the Hole of the Honored Beauty, the river barge transporting them up river.  The session began with Horace returning to the ship, and chewing them out for breaking the schedule.  When they revealed they had been attacked by astiraxes, Horace was profoundly confused, as he has just spoken with the legate who bemoaned the fact that he hadn't been assigned any yet.  This caused my players lots of worry...

They passed up river, getting bumped by river eels frequently, though only attacked a handful of times (DC 15 per half day for a river eel encounter).  On the third day they were searched, which panicked them, but they held out.  A day or so later, a Sea Dragon (Minions) attacked, and I was very impressed that the party was smart enough to stay hidden with the rest of the crew until it passed.

The rest of the journey up river passed uneventfully until Erenhead, during the day and a half long search.  The players (especially Gardrun the dwarf) got pretty antsy, but noone broke out, much to their credit.  They heard Horace get chewed out for the missing crates the Sea Dragon had swallowed, but nothing too bad came of it.

They, onto the open water, during which Gardrun's player admirably portrayed the fear of a dwarf at sea.  The boarding by the inspection party went well, with none of the PCs trying to intervene as the gnome was killed.  It turned out later that Gardrun hadn't realized the Hole could have been opened from the inside, which was probably for the better as he may have tried to kill the orcs.  Regardless, he had strong words about how the gnomes were letting their brother die in vain by not retaliating.  Well played on all fronts.

The rest of the time was fairly quite, until the party made it to Baden's Bluff.  Clara, the gnome, got off with the crew, but it was decided that the humans and dwarf PCs would be dragged along behind the barge for about an hour as they approached, where they would let go and swim for shore.  Gardrun and Assad made it through the sea of fishing rafts unnoticed, but Jehna was spotted.  She feigned having been shipwrecked and was picked up by a 'friendly' fisherman, who asked her a bunch of questions she couldn't answer, and they happily put her to shore unmolested.  Obviously he's a spy...I just haven't figured out for which side he's working yet.  But she'll be tailed, regardless.

At this point, Jehna has separated from the rest of the group, and is looking for a contact in the city, while the other three are looking for the contact from the elves.

As we won't get to meet in person for a month or so due to travel schedules, I've decided to host the Cloak and Dagger portion of CoS here on the boards (see this thread), as I figure it will be easier than trying to roleplay three or four distinct storylines in person, and having people get bored, etc.

Expect the next update sometime in mid-May after the Baden's Bluff stuff resolves.

...and by mid-May I meant mid-June.  But anyway, it looks like the switch happens tomorrow, and depending on how fast the party moves, the final battle as well, or if not, next week.  Wish me luck...

Well, drum roll please:  We just finished Crown of Shadow!  And the best part...the party survived!

We started out with the party rendezvous-ing with Jael, disguised as the elf avatar, in the sewers under Baden's Bluff.  After some quick discussion, he trusted Clara, Assad, and Gardrun, when Jehna suddenly bursts on the scene, following a map of her own.  More frantic discussion, and an uneasy trust is formed.  Jael leads the party out of the sewers, and through the forest.  Over the 11 days of travel, they encountered a party of 8 ungral elves, which they dispatched pretty quickly, the remains of the elven village blasted by Zardrax, patrols all around, and a battle site with dead orcs and elves.

Throughout all of this, Jael has been leaving every night for scouting and 'communing with his monarch' as per the book, which the group swallowed.  In addition, an evil elf, first introduced in a previous cut scene, ran across the party and threatened them, but when Jael identified himself, she retreated with an apology.

At this point, a day or so outside Erethor, Jael made his move.  I had briefed Clara's player on being the shill, to which he agreed.  I thought he would do the best job roleplaying, as he had the most experience, and Jael would probably take out the PC that would be most suspicious of him.  Waiting until Clara was on watch, he calls over to her, where he casts Hold Person, and after a short speech about killing everyone, knocks her out.  She awakens, and his sword has been driven into the ground next to her, threateningly (of course, this is what he tells the others he sees).

Well, needless to say the party was confused, and freaked out.  They moved further on, Clara deciding to keep the sword just in case.  After an hour they decide to camp again, just to get some rest.  The next four days, Clara experiences headaches and nausea.  When she mentions this, Jehna comes up with the great idea she could be pregnant, which Clara supposes could be possible (this was great, and worked so perfectly...they came up with all the explanations they needed...).  Also, Sasha pipes in occasionally, confusing Jael playing Clara...

Finally, after a few easy days of food and water and no danger, they get to the tree outpost.  Climbing it, they find the abandoned storehouse.  Clara is quite happy with it, and Jehna and Assad both dig right in to the food there.  Of all people, only Gardrun is suspicious, which only makes him more so that Clara isn't.  Still, they all sleep, and Clara (who arranged to have third watch, which just so happens to coincide with Midnight), on her watch while the others sleep, starts casting buff-up spells and finally three 'Hold Person's.  My favorite part was as Clara's player starts casting one, then two, then three, etc spells, the other three players, who had been joking and chatting out-of-character slowly quiet and look at Clara's player, asking, "wait, what's going on?".  It's only when she casts Inflict Critical Wounds on Gardrun (the dwarf defender) that they start to get what's going on.

In a moment of brilliance, Gardrun grapples and pins Clara, overwhelming her for long enough that the hold persons on the other two start wearing down.  Jael dropped his disguise at this point, further confusing the players.  Gardrun tries to throw him off the ledge, but he catches on and the last moment and pulls himself up, giving him the chance to draw his sword that he had been carrying around.  He manages to take out the weakened Gardrun (dropped to -1) just as "Hold Person" breaks on Assad.  The battle ensues, with Jehna firing two arrows at a time into melee, and Jael and Assad trading blows.  Assad was brought to 1 hp, before Jael finally fell.

Jehna healed Gardrun, and as Assad debated keeping Jael alive to interrogate him or not, Gardrun chopped his head off.  The party immediately descended from the fort, and after a long debate went back for Clara (even though they had no idea where she was).  After an hour, as they were making a quick camp, the three dire bears come out, which really finally broke their spirit, until they saw it was an elven party.

The remaining trek to Caradul was done in quick time, and they appeared, refreshed, at the audience with the Witch Queen.      There, they reunited with Clara, whose eye had been magically healed.  After a brief reunion, she gave them each cloaks of the Order of the Lady, removed magically Assad's Shadow-brand, and granted them all to stay as long as they want as her guests.

In the end, the players really enjoyed the whole campaign, and the shill player really liked the experience of playing Jael.  We broke with them being given access to anything they wanted, and being offered any position helping the Witch Queen they desired.  We decided to put the PCs on hold here, though we may come back to them at some point in the future (a few of the players were thinking of GMing other kinds of games for a bit in between).  Still, where we go in the future is open, though I like the Crown of Storms thread...

Oh, and a big thanks to FFG for the great campaign setting...Crown of Shadow really is an impressively done story arc.

Here are my DM notes for the entirety of my campaign.  They are less detailed in the Baden's Bluff section, as they happened organically on the PbP thread, as well as the end, which was verbatim from the book.  Hopefully, it will help someone else out running CoS for their group.

Joe, this has been a delightful read, and has brought back many good memories.  It's a tribute to everyone involved in your campaign, the book, and most importantly this board, that Crown of Shadow is so damn intense.

Well done.

What did the players think of what was in the scroll case?

Clara's player guessed that it was mithral.  The other three had no idea, but said that after it was revealed it made sense.

That was very nice to read...

Brings memory of my own CoS campaign. I have a couple of those CoS players still talking about how one of them played the shill and what an excellent twist it was.
