Good news or bad news doesn’t matter to me. Tongue
ATS has been my #1 Midnight source for a while now and consider the TOSs Midnight canon (and just about everything else on the forum). I'm sure there a several silent lurkers like me who share this opinion. Keep up the great work!

Cross post from the yahoo list:

Ok peeps, do not despair to a seemingly sudden drop and the absence of
any word on the entire line from FFG.

It is no news that d20 is dead, the license was revoked by WotC on the
1st of Janurary of this year, that didn't only mean the end of d20
license for 3rd edition, it also meant that all books published under
it were now illegal due to copyright infringement, as such any and all
books with a d20 logo on its cover that were still under possession of
the publisher had to be disposed of.

This is why FFG had to pull all pdfs out of the market, as well as
remove the pages, since they made use of the d20 license themselves in
more than one way.

Pathfinder is an entirely differente scenario because it was never
meant as a d20 product, but rather as an OGL product, the d20 license
was more restrictive and subjet to WotC's whims, the OGL was released
making the game mechanics forever free, cannot be revoked or
purchased. This means anyone could effectivelly create a new d20-like
logo for compatibility and try to center the development of core
books, Piazo has successfully occupied that position with Pathfinder.

In the end the Midnight setting itself can be republished with the
very same rules it had, but instead of claiming the need to use the
core rules it can now bring them with it, can claim compatibility with
the Pathfinder rules (I don't know if there is a specific license for
that or not) or they can decide to publish the books system-less or
with another system, either a new one or one already on the market.

This is not a surprise to any lawyer with basic knowledge of contracts
and copyright laws.

I am AtS site administrator, I took over a few years ago when Todd
talked to me about passing over the banner, since I fell in love with
Midnight as well as this time as admin to the main fan site for the
setting I have learned that FFG is not one to part with their
licenses, instead they try to get profitable ones, the Dragonstar line
is a tribute to that business menthality, it died and is still in the
hands of FFG.

The end of the Midnight line was not caused by a lack of profit or a
fall short of the line in the eyes of its publisher, like Dawnforge
Midnight was meant to be a 3 book line, a core book (MN1, the setting
book), a player's book (MN2, the Atgaisnt the Shadow book) and an
adventure book (MN3, Crown of Shadow adventure). The line was so
surprisingly sucessful that they started publishing more books to it,
the first one was Minions of Shadow, followed by City of Shadow, by
then the line proved more than worthy exploring and FFG then prepared
to publish a longer line of products, the books numbered 7 to 10
involved previous fan authors and produced some of the most imrpessive
supplements of the line, MN8 Forge of Shadow - a sourcebook for Steel
Hill was originally created by 2 fans from AtS, Iain J. Brogan and
Eric Olson, which go by the screen names Shadowfane and Kane
respectively, they joined together as fans wrote the entire book with
the temporary title of Lya Rhuad Emyn - Steel Hill and then subimtted
it to FFG, the company bought the book and published it out of order.

The release of a 2nd edition updated the setting main rules to the 3.5
rules set of the D&D game, which had been out since 6 months after the
release of the original setting book, it also proved how much the
Midnight line increased in popularity and how good and solid its fan
base were, by the time the 2nd edition book was released the setting
ahd seen conversion to a large number of systems.

That was far from the end of the line, after the 2nd edition book 7
more books were published for the line and it was not until MN16 hand
of Shadow that the line seemed to show a diminished interest and
support, the last two books were never released in pdf form (while MN9
also was not it was a boxed set with a large map and meant to be made
available in limited quantity, so it probably would never be).

The line ultimately ended with the d20 license with one book said to
be published on the horizon for many months and no mroe word on it, a
book related to the fell and the veil that separates the world of
Aryth (Midnight's world) from the other planes of existence. This did
tie with a time FFG spoke little of the Midngiht RPG, but also as they
were trying to sell the Midnight Chronicles movie as a pilot for a
continued series and a DVD release. As a result they removed all
mention of a Midnight rpg line to avoid copyright issues with WotC and
have mae no mention of the line again.

I don't believe Midnight is completely dead yet, as Midnight
Chronicles has some "exciting news" to unveil to us so is the future
of the rpg tied to the movie.

If you want to know which books comprise the line you can see the list
I made on Amazon a long time ago here:
http://www.amazon.com/Midnight-Campaign-Setting/lm/R2H30903SBKGZP/ref=cm_lmt_srch_f_1_rsrsrs0

Aside from that midnight had one adventure published by Dire kobold
labeled Into the Garden of Good and Evil, a good number of web
enhancements that were available from FFG that you can now download
from AtS (www.againsttheshadow.net) and a free adventure from Game
Trade magazine called What You Don't Know, also available on the AtS
fansite.

As someone mentioned a good website to find out of print books is
Noble Knight Games, I purchased more than a handful of books from them
and they have the best wrapping I have seen so far, being an
international customer makes me value that as well as a good customer
service and a good reputation.

In my opinion Midnight is not dead yet, it has been hidden from our
sights in the wait of a hopeful sale of the Midnight Chronicles, what
will come out of that, we will jsut have to wait to find out.

 Cheers,

Nif

I think what bothers me most is the way FFG ignores its fans. While I'm disappointed that we won't see any more official Midnight products, I'm more irate at their silence on the fate of the Midnight Chronicles movie/TV show. Even if they weren't allowed to discuss any specifics due to non-disclosure agreements, issuing a statement saying that they are still in discussions but can't say more due to NDAs, then I'd be fine with that... at least we'd know that the movie/TV show idea wasn't completely dead. But at this point in time, and given the mediocre quality of the DVD, I'd say all hope of an ongoing TV series is gone.

FFG could learn a lot from Paizo's approach to communicating with fans. While FFG and Paizo create or have created some of my favourite RPG product lines, I'm more likely to keep buying from Paizo than FFG in the future if only due to the great open communication the former have with their fan base.

End of rant...

Right there with you, Twiceborn. Their total lack of silence on anything Midnight is extremely frustrating. Even just a "Hey, guys, we know you're enthusiastic, but we don't feel like the product line is viable anymore" would be nice to hear. It comes off as rude.

Maybe we should send to the FFG christmas postcards.
"Hi, we are the Midnight RPG fans. Merry christmas!
P.S. Give us something!" Wink
and now seriously
When the Polish publisher of Warhammer  finished publishing a line of products, fans send to him tens emails about that.
They created a web page from which you could submit signatures asking for the continuation of the issue of WFRP.
Maybe try the same with the Midnight and FFG?

Good idea, Savarian. I don't have the skills to design a website, but I'd be happy to sign the petition, if someone else created the site.

I can design it, building it is another story. Nothing says serious though like cool art.

Pretty sure of 2 things:

1. there is an online petition site somewhere.
2. It won't have any effect on FFG.

Sadly. Maybe we can get them to produce something through that site where people put money and if you get enough (you can set how much is needed) then you produce it, or rather publish it.

I'm not actually expecting them to produce anything, even with a petition. I was just hoping we might get some kind of statement pertaining to the future (if any) of Midnight Chronicles, and, by extension, of the game line. And if the statement for both the movie and RPG is that "they have no future," that's fine. At least we'll have closure.

Tome of Shadows III was in the works, but with Smeagol gone for about a year now it seems like we won't even have polished and published fan content any time soon.

What was Smeagol's role in the project? Is there any way someone else can take over? Depending on the skills required, I might consider stepping in. His profile suggests that he logged into ATS today... so although inactive, it seems he's still lurking about.
